Mr. Robert Maxwell Owen: Obituary

Robert Maxwell Owen, age 73, died on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at his home in Big Canoe, Georgia with his family by his side.

Bob was born in Greenville, South Carolina on March 10, 1943 to Joseph Robert Owen and Wilma Riddle Owen. He grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida where he graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1961. He received an athletic scholarship to Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, where he played basketball. He graduated Huntingdon College with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Bob owned an Allstate Insurance agency in Snellville, Georgia and retired after 30 years of service. After retirement, he moved with his wife to Big Canoe, Georgia where he loved to play golf and continued to be active in sports, particularly hunting and fishing.

He was a Master Mason of the Masonic Temple Grand Lodge of Georgia F.& A.M. Snellville Lodge No. 99, a member of the Yaarab Shriners International, a 32nd Degree Member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Southern Jurisdiction of the U.S.A., a Member of the Big Canoe Chapel, Past President of the Georgia Chapter of the Safari Club International, Member of the Huntingdon Alumni Board, Former Chairman of the Huntingdon College Athletic Hall of Fame, Former Member of Huntingdon Athletic Board, and was Elected into the Huntingdon College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Bob is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Briscoe Owen (Bege), son Joseph Jay Owen, daughter Dacia Owen Edmondson, daughter-in-law Wendy Thibadeau Owen, son-in-law: Harold Dewayne Edmondson, four grandchildren Maxwell Joseph Owen, Elizabeth Catherine Owen, Kaitlyn Reese Edmondson, Owen James Edmondson, and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Big Canoe Chapel in Big Canoe, Georgia on Saturday March 4, 2017 at 2:00pm. Entombment will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, South Carolina. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Athens “Y” Camp at P.O. Box 8, 1000 Y Camp Rd, Tallulah Falls, GA 30573 or donate to the Sarcoma Foundation of America at 9899 Main Street, Suite 204, Damascus, MD 20872.
