Dragons Improve To 5-3, Defeat 7-A Newton

After winning their morning matinee against Murray County, the PHS Dragons varsity baseball team took on the Newton Rams this past Saturday afternoon. Newton, is out of 7-A and came into the game 7-3 after defeating Murray County 5-3 in their first game of the day.

For the Dragons, Dalton Sipsy took to the mound for game 2 of the day, and pitched very effectively. Sipsy needed only 7 pitches to get out of the top of the 1st, which included a strikeout. Pickens could not capitalize on a lead off single by Travis Huffman as he was left stranded at 3rd to send us to the 2nd, score still at 0-0. Sipsy continued his good start to the game by striking out two more Rams in the top of the 2nd. Brady Moore gave the Dragons the lead in the bottom of the frame when he drove in Zack Moore as Pickens held a 1-0 lead going to the 3rd.

With nothing doing for either team in the 3rd, we’d go to 4th, with Pickens still ahead of Newton 1-0. The Rams tied things up at 1 in the top of the 4th. The tie would not last long as the Dragons scored 4 in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead 5-1 going to the 5th. Sipsy settled down in the 5th and collected two more K’s to bring his total on the day to 7. Pickens went 1-2-3 in order in the bottom of the 5th to send us to the 6th, Dragons leading, 5-1.

Newton added two runs in the top of the 6th to cut the Dragons lead to 5-3. Pickens plated 2 runs themselves in the bottom of the frame to stretch their lead out 7-3 going to the 7th. The Dragons would shut down any comeback attempt by the Rams in the top of the 7th to get the sweep on the afternoon, 7-3.
