Train derailed near Pickens-Gilmer county line on Whitestone Road

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. – Currently, Pickens County Fire and Rescue is working with the assistance of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Hazmat teams on a train locomotive that derailed near the Pickens-Gilmer County Line on Whitestone Road. Fortunately, there have not been any injuries and only the fuel from the locomotive has leaked out. Teams are working to contain the spill and prevent it from entering a nearby stream.

Details regarding the cause of the derailment are currently being investigated by Georgia Northeastern Railroad.

The train remained upright during the incident and only the one locomotive left the track.
The area of the spill was not near any homes or other businesses so evacuations were not necessary.

A hazmat team works to contain the fuel spill from entering a stream.

Additional barriers are set in place to prevent the fuel spill from reaching a stream.
