Charles Anthony Payne (Tony): Obituary

Mr. Tony Payne, age 78 of Jasper, Georgia passed away Friday, October 11, 2019 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Lloyd and Erma Payne and his son-in-law, Mark Stout.

Charles Anthony Payne (Tony) was born in Whitestone, Georgia on February 23, 1941, the son of Erma Dale Payne and John Lloyd Payne. He was born at home and remained a resident of Pickens County his entire life. After graduating Shorter College, Tony married his High School sweetheart and love of his life, Sandra Wheeler Payne, in 1964. Together they had two children, Charles Anthony Payne, Jr. “Chuck” and Tonia Len Payne Stout. Tony worked for The Georgia Marble Company for over 30 years and would enthusiastically admit that he enjoyed retirement much more. Tony served many years as Chairman of the Deacons at First Baptist Church Jasper, and in his free time enjoyed hunting, shooting, and occasionally shared his talents with the Tater Patch Players in musicals such as Oklahoma and The Music Man. Cowboy movies were his favorite, and it was understood that you do not interrupt John Wayne movies.

Tony is survived by his wife, Sandra Payne; his brother, Bob Payne (Mary Ellen); his sister, Patsy Payne Benson; his children, Chuck Payne (Lisa) and Tonia Payne Stout; one niece, many nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews; and also his grandchildren, Julianna Payne, Sam Stout, Lucy Stout, and Molly Stout. Tony would unashamedly acknowledge that his grandchildren were the light of his life, kept the twinkle in his eye, and were his proudest accomplishment. He also loved his dog, Izzy, which Sandra told him he could not have.

Tony’s sense of humor, kind smile, and tender heart will be missed by everyone privileged to have known him.

A celebration of his life will take place at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Jimmy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Lake Forest Memorial Park .

The family will be receiving friends at Roper Funeral Home, Sunday, October 13, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The family request in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the Jasper First Baptist Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory.
