JASPER, Ga. – A shooter, now identified as Nathan Lewis Highsmith, opened fire this evening in Pickens County near the dollar general in the Golden Springs area. Pickens County Sheriff’s office has released the following statement.
On the evening of January 20, 2022 around 6 pm, Pickens Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the golden springs area.
Upon arrival at the residence, deputies found two individuals shot. The suspect identified as Nathan Lewis Highsmith, 26, years old of Canton, Georgia, had fled the scene in what was reported to be a Honda Accord.
He was later taken into custody by Sandy Springs Police Department, charged with Aggravated Assault and Felony Murder.
One of the injured individuals was transported to the local Piedmont hospital while the other was transported to Kennestone hospital. One of the victims died in the hospital as a result of his injuries. At this time there is no update on the other individual’s medical condition.
The Georgia Bureau of investigation is assisting the Pickens Sheriff’s Office in the investigation. no other details will be shared at this time as this is an ongoing and active investigation.
