Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragons varsity baseball team, made the hour or so trip up to Dahlonega, to take on the Lumpkin County Indians in a non-region ball game. This game, was scheduled for earlier in the season, but was postponed due to weather. Pickens, was coming off of a tough 3-game series against Northwest Whitfield, & looked to strike gold against the Indians heading into their final series of the regular season next week.
The Dragons, got off to a good start early in this one as Caswell Smith led off with a hit, then Colby James followed with a hit, then Tyler Vreeland drove them in with a 2 RBI single to give Pickens a 2-0 lead over the Indians, going to the bottom of the 1st. The bottom of the frame saw Dragon starter Ben Miller need only 7 pitches to send us to the 2nd, Dragons up, 2-0.
Miller, would strike out the side in the bottom of the 2nd, but in between that, Lumpkin was able to score 2 runs on 1 hit, to tie things up at 2, going to the 3rd. In the bottom of the 3rd, Lumpkin took the lead scoring 4 times to make it 6-2, going to the 4th.
In the top of the 4th, the Dragons cut the Indian lead in half as Hunter White drove in Chad Pacas, to make it 6-3. In the bottom of the inning, the Indians got that run back, scoring once to make it 7-3, going to the 5th.
In the bottom half of the 5th, Lumpkin added to their lead by scoring 5 runs to make it 12-3. That score would hold up over the final two innings as the Lumpkin Indians get the win, 12-3.
For Pickens, they can now put this week behind them and focus on next week, as they begin a 3-game series with the LaFayette Ramblers. The Dragons are currently in 3rd place in the region at 9-6. The first game of the series is set to begin on Tuesday, with a first pitch time of 5:30.

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS JV Dragons baseball team hosted the White County Warriors at Dragons Field at PCMS. The JV Dragons, looked to kick things off in 2017 with a win at home.
Ben Miller, took to the mound for the JV Dragons and looked good in the top of the 1st. Miller K’d 2 batters in the top of the frame sending us to the bottom of the 1st. Pickens struck first as Jay Jones drew a leadoff walk and was driven in by Colby James on an RBI double. James then would be driven in by Adam Massey as the Dragons took a 2-0 lead going to the 2nd.
In the top of the 2nd, White County struck for 4 runs to take the lead over Pickens 4-2. The bottom of the 2nd saw the Dragons leave two stranded after Hunter Kalson led off the inning with a single. We would go to the 3rd, with the Warriors ahead, 4-2.
In the 3rd, Aiden Sanchez relieved Evan Jones and struck two Warriors out sending us to the bottom of the inning. Pickens cut the White County lead to 4-3 as Jacob Kirchoff drove in Lucas Headrick with an RBI single. In the 4th, the Dragons tied it up at 4 after Christian Chumley drove in Headrick with an RBI single.
The bottom of the 5th would be the turning point of the ball game. After Kirchoff & Bailey Truitt reached on errors, Jones drove them in with a single to give Pickens the lead back, 6-4. Headrick & Massey were able to draw back to back walks, then Chumley cleared the bases with a 3-RBI single to stretch the Dragons lead over the Warriors to 9-4.
After leading off with a single in the bottom of the 6th, Tyler Vreeland scored after a wild pitch to make it 10-4. White County would not go quietly as they started a rally in the top of the 7th. The Warriors scored two runs before Shawn Mask shut them down to seal a 10-6 win for the JV Dragons.
Ben Miller went 1 1/3 innings with 2 K’s, Evan Jones went 2/3 innings with 1 K, Aiden Sanchez went 2 innings with 2 K’s, Austin Plumley went 2 innings, & Shawn Mask went 1 inning
Pickens had 10 runs on 8 hits
Christian Chumley went 2-2 with 4 RBI
Adam Massey went 1-1 with an RBI, 1 run scored, & 3 walks
Jay Jones went 1-3 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, 1 walk, & 1 HBP
Jacob Kirchoff went 1-3 with 1 RBI, a single, & 1 run scored
Lucas Headrick went 1-3 with 1 single, 3 runs scored, 1 walk, & 1 HBP
Colby James went 1-4 with 1 RBI, 1 double, & 1 walk
Tyler Vreeland went 1-2 with 1 single, & 1 run scored
The JV Dragons will have a quick turnaround as they travel to White County to take on the Warriors this afternoon. First pitch set for 5:30 p.m.
