Early Runs For Northwest Proves Too Much For Pickens

Team FYN Sports

After the game 1 loss to the Lady Bruins the Dragonettes of Pickens were in a must win situation. A Pickens win would force a deciding game 3 in the first round of the 6-AAAA region tournament.  A Dragonettes loss would advance the Lady Bruins to the next round.

Northwest basically picked up in game 2 where they left off in the first game of the day.  The scoring came fast and often for the Lady Bruins with runs in the first with 4, 5 in the second and 2 in the third and then 3 insurance runs in the sixth to total the game at 14.  The Pickens offense fought to stay close early but in the end their effort would fall short only scoring six in the loss.  The Pickens defense helped with the Lady Bruin put runs on the board by committing 5 errors in the game.

Coach Sarah Pinson sent Charlie Hulsey to the circle with hopes of slowing down the powerful offense of Northwest.  Hulsey threw 108 pitches in her 5 innings of work.  The Lady Bruins put up 14 runs(10 earned) on 16 hits and 3 walks in the game.  The Dragonettes produced 6 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks.  Ellie Abner led the Dragonettes at the plate with a 3 for 4 night and pushing 5 RBI’s across the plate.  Katherine Densmore(2 for 3) and Chloe McPherson(2 for 3, 1 RBI) also competed well at the plate.

This 14-6 loss ends the Dragonettes hopes for an appearance deep in the tournament and ends the 2018 season.  This game was also the last game of high school for 5 Dragonette players, a statistician and a team manager.  Best wishes for the next season and also for the futures of these graduating seniors.

Dragonettes Breath Fire on Indians

Team FYN Sports

The Pickens High School Softball team traveled to Lumpkin Co on Monday looking to get a little revenge fro the opening day loss to the Indians.  With the weather cooler than normal on Monday it was a perfect day for a region game between two good teams.

Both teams started slow with 2 innings of scoreless ball and with Sarah Morris in the circle for Pickens, this is something the Indians would see for the rest of the game. The ladies of Lumpkin could on sit and stare at zeros on their side of the scoreboard as Morris pitched a gem of a game,  In her outstanding performance, Morris threw a mere 51 pitches giving up just 2 hits and walking 3 Indian Batters.  9 out of 15 opposing hitters saw first pitch strikes out of Morris’s hand in the 12-0 shut out win for Sarah Morris and the Dragonettes.

The third inning had the Indians defense seeing fire.  The Dragonettes opened the scoring gates and breathed fire upon the pitches from their circle opponent.  With almost every batter for Pickens having an outstanding day, I will say that this was a total team effort with everyone in the line contributing to the victory and the sought after revenge from the opening day defeat.  Hattie Baker was perfect at the plate going 2-2 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored and as was Ellie Abner with a 3-3 game and 2 RBI.

The Dragonettes will travel to Lafayette on Wednesday to face the Ramblers in region action.  Start time is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

Dragonettes Take Down Raiders

Team FYN Sports

The Dragonettes of Pickens High School traveled to Whitfield County to face off with the Southeast Whitfield Raiders on Thursday in a region match up.  A win is never a given but with the Raiders coming in at 0-17 overall and 0-9 in region play Pickens were confident they could leave with a “W”.

With Pickens being the visiting team they had the opportunity to set the pace of the game and it didn’t take long.  The Raiders knew in the top of the first that it was going to be a tough task to stop the Dragonettes offense. Allison Tlacil stepped in the box as the first batter and reached base on a single.  Sarah Morris and Monica Hughes would follow suit adding singles of their own in the inning. Katherine Densmore walked followed by an awesome double by Chloe McPherson to put 4 runs on the board quick against the Raiders pitcher.  Pickens continued their offensive onslaught in the second and third innings putting 3 runs in each inning.  Up 10-0 heading into the bottom half of inning 3, the Raiders were finally able to get something going against a Dragonettes picher and put 2 runs on the board.  Pickens added an insurance run in the sixth with Southeast Whitfield adding 1 run up in the fifth and sixth but they wouldn’t be enough to catch the Dragonettes.

Sarah Morris(starter), Charlie Hulsey and Grayson Cleghorn shared the circle in the game.  Morris went 2 innings throwing 20 pitches.  Hulsey(winning pitcher) allowed 4 runs(3 earned) on 6 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.  Finishing the game, Cleghorn threw 5 pitches and had a strikeout.  At the plate several Dragonettes (12 hits on the day)had excellent games.  Allie Tlacil was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, Sarah Morris-2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Chloe McPherson- 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.  Ellie Abner also had 3 RBI in the game.

The Drqagonettes will travel to Lumpkin Co. on Monday the 17th to face off in a 5:55 PM game with the Indians.
