The Pickens Dragons (12-3, 4-1 Region 6-AAAA) ended 2019 on a tough note by dropping games to Sonoraville and Lassiter. On Friday night, Jan. 3, 2020, they looked to get back on track as they hosted the Southeast Whitfield Raiders (0-17, 0-6) in a region battle.
To start the first quarter, the Dragons went on an 8-0 run with three made shots from Noah Sutton and one from Ean Goodwin. The rest of the frame was back-and-forth as Pickens outscored Southeast Whitfield 8-7 to take a 16-7 lead going to the second quarter.
In the second quarter, after a pair of made free throws by the Raiders, Pickens went on another 8-0 run fueled by Sutton and Luke Rogers. Later in the quarter, the Dragons went on an 11-0 run with Sutton making a couple of shots, Whit Pierce making a shot, Tucker Lowe hitting a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, and Aidan Sanchez hitting a free throw to cap off the run. Going into the half, Pickens led Southeast Whitfield, 36-13.
In the third quarter, Sutton and Goodwin led a 6-0 run for the Dragons to make it 42-13 early. Later in the third, Owen Moss went on a personal 6-0 run with two made shots and a pair of free throws. To close out the quarter, Sanchez connected on a layup to make it 55-17 Pickens going to the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was shortened but productive for the Dragons as Clay Shoffer made two made shots, Will Roland connected on a shot, Daniel Tetterton made a shot, Spencer Moody made a free throw, and Hayes Pickett made two shots. The final in this one was 68-22 to Pickens.
Leading the way for the Dragons were: Noah Sutton (22 points), Luke Rogers (10 points), Owen Moss (nine points), and Tucker Lowe (six points).
Pickens will be back on the court Saturday, Jan. 4, as the Northwest Whitfield Bruins come to Jasper for an afternoon tilt. Both teams are close in the region and this game will be crucial to the standings going forward. Tip-off is set for 4:30.
After the Nettes’ big win, the Dragons took the floor to take on the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in their final game of the regular season. Coming into the game, Pickens knew where they would be next week when the region tournament starts, but looked to get some momentum built going into it.
Southeast Whitfield, got off to the quick start in the opening quarter, but the Dragons were able to cut into the lead & the Raiders held a 14-9 advantage going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Raiders outscored Pickens 16-9, to extend their lead to 30-18 going into the break.
In the 3rd, the Raiders outscored the Dragons slightly, 14-12, to extend their lead to 44-30, going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Pickens, did what they’ve done lately & made things interesting at the end. Trailing by 14 to start the frame, the Dragons stormed back and got within a couple of points of Southeast Whitfield. Pickens, outscored the Raiders 21-14 in the 4th, but Southeast Whitfield was able to hit a few late free throws to seal it, 58-51.

Pickens, will now look towards the 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield next week. The Dragons, will come in as the 6th seed, & take on the 3rd seeded Heritage Generals in the 1st round on Tuesday. Pickens & Heritage split their two regular season meetings with each winning on the others floor. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
After the JV Nettes’ & varsity Nettes’ picked up big wins, the Dragons varsity basketball team looked to complete the afternoon sweep over 7A Forsyth Central.
The Bulldogs, started the game on a 7-0 run. Pickens, fought back and after one, Forsyth Central led the Dragons, 21-16. In the 2nd quarter, the Dragons stayed within striking distance as the Bulldogs kept the lead going into halftime, 41-30.
The 3rd quarter, saw a career achievement reached as Senior Seth Bishop surpassed 1,000 points during his time at PHS. Forsyth Central, used a 23-12 quarter run to extend their lead going to the 4th, 64-42. The 4th quarter was closly contested with the Bulldogs barely outscoring the dragons, 17-15. Forsyth Central took the win however, 81-57.

After the Nettes’ & Lady Tigers game concluded, it was time for the Dragons & the Tigers to take the floor. Dawson, much like their Lady Tiger teammates, came into this game ranked in the top ten in the 3A classification while Pickens came in looking to snap a bad streak and pick up a big non region win.
The game got off to a slow start with both teams trying to get that first bucket to go down. Eventually, both teams got points on the board and it would be Dawson taking a 21-12 lead over the Dragons going to the 2nd. Scoring in the 2nd quarter was close as the Tigers just managed to outscore Pickens 21-15 in the frame. Taking a 42-27 lead into the half.
The 3 pointer was falling for the Tigers last night & they used it to stop any run the Dragons would muster. Going to the 4th, Dawson led Pickens 67-41. The final from Dawsonville would be 80-47, Dawson.

Much like the Nettes’, the Dragons, will be participating in a holiday tournament next week. They will be competing in the Model Big Blue Classic being held at Model High School in Rome starting next Thursday as they take on the Calhoun Yellow Jackets at 3 pm.
After the Nettes’ took home an exciting win, the Dragons looked to pull off a big win as their 2018 home portion of their season came to a close. The Christian Heritage Lions, came in ranked in the top 10 in the A-Private classification.
In the first, it was the away team that got off to the quick start. The Dragons, got back into it just before the end of the frame as the Lions held a 14-6 lead going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter, saw Christian Heritage get the three ball working. The Lions used a 26-14 2nd quarter run to take a 40-20 lead into the half.
The 3rd quarter, saw the Lions extend their lead on Pickens as they took a 65-29 advantage into the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the younger players for the Dragons got in and looked good. Pickens outscored Christian Heritage in the 4th, 11-8. The Lions would take this one however, 73-40.

Pickens, will be on the road tonight as they will head to Dawsonville to face the Dawson Tigers in a non-region contest. The Tigers, much like the Lady Tigers, are ranked in the top 10 of the AAA classification. Tip off set for 8:30.
After the Nettes picked up a big win earlier, the Dragons looked to complete the varsity sweep over a Southeast Whitfield Raider team that recently took down reigning 6-AAAA region champs Lafayette not too long ago.
In the 1st, both teams found scoring, mainly inside the paint. After one, the Southeast Whitfield Raiders led the Dragons 21-17. In the 2nd, the Raiders started getting the tree ball to go down, but Pickens stayed within striking distance. Going into the half, Southeast Whitfield held a 44-34 lead.
The 3rd quarter scoring again was close as the two teams went back and forth. The Raiders, outscored Pickens 18-15, & held a 62-49 lead going to the 4th. Southeast Whitfield used a 14-6 4th quarter run, to take this one from the Dragons, 76-55.

Much like the Nettes’, the PHS varsity Dragons basketball team was looking for their 2nd straight win. After getting their first win of the season against Ridgeland last Friday, Pickens came in looking for back to back wins before heading back into region play.
In the 1st quarter, much like the girls game, it was the visitors that got off to the quick start. After one, the Bulldogs held a 19-9 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the offense for the Dragons flowed much better, they were able to outscore Cedartown 17-15, to cut the lead to 34-26, going into the break.
The 3rd quarter, was not very friendly to the home team. The Bulldogs outscored Pickens, 21-8, as they built up a 55-34 lead going to the 4th. When this one finished, the final score would be 74-47.

After the Nettes’ picked up their 2nd win of the young season, the Dragons looked to capture their first win as they took on the Hiwassee Dam Eagles out of North Carolina.
The 1st quarter was packed with action as both teams saw offensive success early on. Pickens, got the upper hand & took a 19-15 lead over the Eagles going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, Hiwassee Dam used a run to take the lead from the Dragons. Having outscored Pickens 18-12 in the frame, the Eagles grabbed the lead, 33-31, going to the break.
In a back and forth 3rd quarter, the Dragons made their own run to regain the lead from Hiwassee Dam. Using a slight 20-17 quarter advantage, Pickens found themselves ahead going to the 4th, 51-50. In the 4th, Hiwassee Dam was able to make shots late to take this one, 66-60.
