On what was a rainy, turned foggy evening last night, the PHS Dragons varsity football team traveled to take on the Heritage Generals. Coming into the game, Pickens sat 3rd in the region at 3-2, while Heritage was just ahead at 4-1. The winner, would finish 2nd in the region, & host the 1st round of the state playoffs next week.
Pickens won the toss, but elected to differ to the 2nd half. Heritage, with the help of some costly penalties, got on the board first with a 1-yd TD run at the 9:51 mark of the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead. That would be the only scoring done in the 1st quarter and we would head to the 2nd quarter with the Generals ahead, 7-0. Both teams were trading possessions back and forth in the 2nd quarter until Heritage intercepted a pass and took it all the way to the end zone to increase the lead to 14-0 with 5:22 left in the 1st half. The Generals again added to their lead at the 3:37 mark with a 9-yd TD run to make it 21-0. After nearly missing on several prior chances, Senior QB Jacob Brumby connected down the middle of the field to an open Zach Goss for a 56-yd TD pass at the 1:09 mark of the first half. However, Heritage would strike just before the half with a 35-yd TD pass to give us a halftime score of 28-7 in favor of the Generals.
The Dragons, came out battling in the 3rd quarter as they’re opening drive of the 2nd half lasted over 6 minutes, & was capped off by a 1-yd TD run from Sophomore C.J. Streicher to make it 28-14 with 5:46 left in the 3rd. Then, the Pickens defense would step up as Brady Moore picked off a pass attempt that was short of it’s intended target, & set up the Dragons with good field position after a nice return. The esuing drive stalled however & we would head to the 4th with Heritage leading, 28-14.
A pair of 1-yd TD runs from the Generals at the 11:47 & 7:13 marks of the 4th, gave Heritage a 42-14 lead over the Dragons. Pickens would not go quietly however as Brumby found fellow Senior Josh Cain on a well designed screen play & Cain would take it into the end zone from 28-yds out to make it 42-21 with 4:05 left in the game. The Generals, would score late in the game with a 13-yd TD run to give us a final of 49-21.

With the loss, Pickens finishes the regular season at 5-5, & in a tie for 3rd in the region at 3-3. Due to the 3-way tie, Pickens, Northwest, & Southeast Whitfield will play in a mini-playoff on Monday at 7 p.m. at North Murray. Pickens and Northwest Whitfield will play first. The winner, will be in the playoffs. The loser of that first game, will then play Southeast Whitfield. Winner of that game will be in the playoffs. The loser, will finish 5th in the region.
This past Friday, the PHS football team hosted the Generals of Heritage in a big 6-AAAA region matchup. A win for the Dragons would give them a share of the region title, and the #3 seed as determined by a tie-breaker. It was also a special night as they recognized all the seniors from players, managers, cheerleaders, & band members before the ball game.
Heritage won the toss and elected to receive to have a crack at the 1st points. After each team traded possessions, The Generals got on the board first with a 17-yd td pass at the 4:52 mark to lead it 7-0. The Dragons found their way into the end zone at the 2:55 mark after a 3-yd run from C.J. Streicher, tying things up at 7 as we went to the 2nd quarter.
Heritage took the lead back at the 10:19 mark after an 8-yd td pass, making it 14-7 Generals. Pickens answered when Streicher found pay dirt for a 2nd time, this one coming after an 8-yd run at the 6:15 mark to once again tie things up at 14. An interception by the Generals led to a 65-yd td pass at the 4:01 mark giving Heritage a lead of 21-14 as we hit halftime.
In the 3rd, Heritage added to their lead with a 7-yd td run at the 5:43 mark, making it 28-14 Generals. The Dragons were able to counter with a 3-yd td run from senior Chris Pittman at the 1:44 mark to cut the Heritage lead in half, 28-21. The Generals however were able to stretch the lead out once again just before the end of the 3rd with a 13-yd td run. Giving Heritage a 35-21 advantage going to the 4th.
The Generals again added to their lead with a 44-yd td pass at the 10:19 mark, making it 41-21 after a missed PAT. An interception returned for a td at the 8:18 mark gave Heritage a 48-21 lead. Dylan Huffman found the end zone for the Dragons at the 6:14 mark making it 48-28 Heritage. Pickens again scored late in the 4th after a 9-yd td pass from Jacob Brumby to Trevon Hawkins gave us a final of 48-35, Heritage.

Next week, the GHSA 4A state football playoffs begin and Pickens will be on the road taking on the #1 seed out of region 8, the Jefferson Dragons. Jefferson is 9-1 on the season and finished 5-0 in region 8. Kickoff is set for 7:30
Last night, the PHS Dragons football team took to the road to take on the Ramblers of LaFayette. Pickens, came into the game at the top of the 6-AAAA standings and were looking to keep pace with Northwest Whitfield & Ridgeland.
Pickens won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. The Dragons were able to work the ball down the field with Chris Pittman capping the opening drive off getting his 10th rushing td on the season with a 4-yd run at the 9:03 left in the 1st quarter. After a stop on defense, Dylan Huffman would get his 5th rushing td of the season after a 3-yd run to make it 14-0 Pickens at the 4:43 mark of the 1st. The Dragons then recovered a fumble at the LaFayette 1-yd line after the Ramblers were pushed back deep into their own territory. C.J. Streicher powered in for the score, making it 21-0 with 4:21 left in the 1st quarter.
Just before the opening frame came to a close, Jacob Brumby found Josh Cain on a receiver screen for an 8-yd td. Giving Pickens a 27-0 lead going to the 2nd. LaFayette got on the board following a 15-yd screen pass at the 9:07 mark of the 1st half, making it 27-6 Dragons. Pickens answered at the 2:46 mark with a Brumby 1-yd td run to give us a halftime score of 34-6, Dragons leading.
Alex Pittman came up with an interception on defense & the Dragons turned that into points as Brumby got in for his 2nd rushing td on the night, this time from 3-yds extending the lead to 41-6 as we headed to the 4th. With the clock running in the final quarter of play, Streicher capped off the game with his 2nd rushing td of the night as he punched it in from 4-yds, giving us a final of 48-6, Pickens.

Next week, Pickens will be back home at Dragons Stadium to host the Generals of Heritage. Heritage has also clinched a playoff spot by virtue of Southeast Whitfield’s loss to Northwest Whitfield last night. A win for the Dragons gives them a share of the 6-AAAA region title. Game time is set for 7:30.
Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity football team hosted the Generals of Heritage in another crucial 7-AAAA region game. On a night where the newest class of the PHS Athletics Hall of Fame and the 8th grade middle school championship football team were honored, the Dragons looked to clinch their 2nd straight playoff berth with a win over the Generals.
Pickens won the toss, electing to differ to the 2nd half giving Heritage the ball first. The Generals tried to catch the Dragons off guard with a trick play on the opening kickoff but, Pickens didn’t fall for it and Heritage had to start deep inside their own territory as a result. The Generals were able to march down the field however and got into the end zone after a double pass taking the 7-0 lead with 8:58 left in the opening frame. The Dragons answered the Generals score with a 1-yd Chris Pittman touchdown run to tie things up at 7 as we went to the 2nd quarter.
Both teams went back and forth defensively in the 2nd quarter as the only scoring came at the 5:34 mark when Ty Chastain knocked a 42-yd field goal through the uprights giving Pickens a 10-7 lead at the break. In the 3rd quarter, Chris Pittman found the end zone for the 2nd time on the night at the 3:17 mark as he put the Dragons ahead 17-7 going the 4th and final quarter.
Early in the 4th, with the Generals backed up deep in their own territory, the Pickens defense forced a safety with 11:34 left in the ball game stretching the lead out to 19-7. After getting the ball back on the ensuing kickoff, the Dragons marched down the field and Chris Pittman found pay dirt for the 3rd time making it 25-7 with 9-13 left in the game. Heritage did not go quietly as they connected on a 33-yd screen pass for a touchdown at the 6:01 mark cutting it it 25-13. Kelton Gilbert got in on the action as the Sophomore running back scampered 27-yds for the touchdown making it 32-13 with 3:29 left in the game.
The Generals found the end zone at the 1:06 mark after a 1-yd pass but could not convert the two-point try giving us a score of 32-19. The Dragons were able to fall on the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock to seal the win, 32-19. With the win, Pickens has clinched a playoff berth and are now 7-1 on the season & 4-1 in region play.
On the night, Pickens had 18 1st downs, went 6/13 on 3rd down, and 1/1 on 4th down, ran 69 plays for a total of 422 yards, ran for 366 yards on 63 rushes & threw for 56 yards on 6 passes.

Defensively, Pickens forced one fumble, recovered a fumble, recorded a sack, and forced several hurries and broke up 6 passes on the night.

Pickens will travel to Ellijay to take on the Bobcats of Gilmer next week in the annual 515 rivalry match up. Gilmer is 3-5 on the season & 2-3 in region play and fighting for a possible 3 or 4 seed in the playoffs. Pickens, is hoping to stay in the hunt for the 2 seed.
Last night, the Pickens varsity football team hosted the LaFayette Ramblers in a 7-AAAA match up. The Dragons were finally back home after nearly a month on the road and looked to build off of their road win against Southeast Whitfield last week. The Homecoming crowd would not be disapppointed.
Pickens won the toss and differed to the 2nd half giving LaFayette the ball first. After the defense made a stand, Chris Pittman scored the 1st of his 2 rushing touchdowns with 9:40 to go in the 1st quarter. The other score came with 33 seconds left as the Dragons took a 14-0 lead into the 2nd quarter
The Pickens defense and punt return teams continued to give the Dragon offense great starting field position in the 2nd quarter. This quarter offensively belonged to Dillon Gasaway, who found the end zone twice on touchdown runs. The first one came from 5-yds out at the 11:24 mark stretching the Pickens lead to 21-0. The 2nd Gasaway touchdown run came from 6-yds out at the 1:11 mark giving us a halftime score of 28-0 Dragons.
During the intermission, Homecoming Maid of Honor & Queen were crowned. Hunter Harrington was named Maid of Honor & Kerrie Lee was named Homecoming Queen for the 2015-16 season.
In the 3rd quarter, the Pickens running game continued it’s strong performance as Dillon Gasaway found the end zone from 32-yds out for his 3rd score of the game making it 35-0 Dragons with 9:04 left in the 3rd quarter. Freshman Trevon Hawkins got in on the scoring as he plowed through from 2-yds out making the score 42-0 Dragons with 6:57 left in the 3rd. Ty Chastain then tacked on a 42-yd field goal giving Pickens a 45-0 lead going to the 4th.
Ten seconds into the 4th quarter, Hawkins again found pay dirt. This time, from 35-yds out giving the Dragons a 52-0 lead. The Pickens defense shut out the Rambler offense and the Dragons took this one 52-0. Pickens is now 6-1 on the season and now in 2nd in 7-AAAA at 3-1.
On the night, the Dragons collected 14 first downs, went 4/9 on 3rd down, & 1/2 on 4th down. Pickens 55 total plays for 408 yards including 356 yards coming on the ground and 7 touchdowns. Defensively, the Dragons forced 4 turnovers (3 fumbles & 1 INT), & held the LaFayette offense to 83 total yards.
In spot start duty, Jacob Brumby went 6/10 for 52 yards passing
Dillon Gasaway led Pickens in rushing with 147 yards on 12 carries, a 12.3 ypc average & 3 touchdowns, Trevon Hawkins finished the night with 103 yards on 11 carries for a 9.4 ypc average & 2 touchdowns, & Chris Pittman added 63 yards on 9 carries for a 7 ypc average and 2 touchdowns.
Hunter Golden led the Dragons in receiving on the evening with 3 catches for 25 yards while Walker Lawrence added 21 yards on 2 catches
Kyle West led Pickens in tackles on the night with 7 total 3 solo, 4 assists, and 1 fumble recovery, Dillin Eilers had 6 total tackles 4 solo, 2 assists, 2 TFL, & 1 INT, & Jacob Gordon added 6 total tackles 5 solo, 1 assist, & 1 forced fumble. Austin Massey & Nick Southern also had fumble recoveries.
Chris Pittman punted twice for 72 yards a 36 yard average, with a long of 37 & 1 inside the 20
Zack Hermann returned 4 punts for 68 yards a 17 yards average with a long of 33 yards

Pickens again will be home next week as they host the Generals of Heritage, Catoosa in another key 7-AAAA game. Heritage is 4-3 on the season & 2-2 in region play.
The Pickens Dragons are set to bounce back from a disappointing loss last week at the hands of the Northwest Whitfield Bruins, as this Friday, September 20, the team returns to Dragons Stadium to take on the Heritage Generals. (more…)
The Pickens Dragons traveled to Ringgold on Friday night to play the Heritage Generals and did not disappoint the fans that made the trip, as they completely dominated the game and won 45-0, providing the team its first shutout since the season opening game of the 2006 season.
