Pickens Animal Shelter Re-opens Tuesday

The Pickens Animal Shelter reopened Tuesday, August 16th after a 12-day quarantine due to parvovirus. An outbreak of the deadly canine parvovirus temporarily closed the facility earlier this month, after the shelter took in three German Shepherd pups found by the roadside. Shelter staff members said the puppies seemed fine at first, but parvo has an incubation period of five to 10 days and sure enough, the puppies started showing symptoms within a week. The shelter responded by immediately declaring a quarantine. However, Animal Control Officer, Deputy Joey Hancock said several other puppies had to be put down due to the outbreak, although he added he couldn’t say how many animals were euthanized. (more…)
