Politics and Religion Don’t Mix Or Do They?

Do politics and religion mix? It really depends on how you frame the question or from which perspective you come. However, in reality there is no real way to separate the two. Religion, in some shape or form, propels and shapes politics. Politics necessarily contain a moral framework. The question always is, whose morality?

When a law is passed that murder is wrong and punishable, isn’t that a moral decision. Someone decided killing someone else is a crime unless, of course, it is just a baby inside a womb. In there murder is legal. This is another moral decision right?

We Americans tend to compartmentalize things. We separate (wrongly) things into categories such as secular and sacred. This assumes that some areas of life have nothing to do with God or God’s commands. This is utterly and completely false. Where can you go to escape God’s presence or laws (Psalm 139)? Nowhere. Scripture even says that if we make our bed in hell, He is there. There is no escape from Him or from our accountability to Him.

I don’t care who our president is in 2013, his religion will affect his administration. If he is prolife he will act one way and if he is prochoice he will act another way. These views are based on religion even if that religion is humanism or Marxism. These are faiths and faith compels actions. A president’s faith will determine who he keeps company with, which bills he will propose, and what directives he will give his minions to carry out.

The last few weeks I wrote on Mormonism because Mitt Romney is a Mormon and his faith will play a part in his administration if he is elected. You have to decide whether that is an issue for you.

When we vote and become political, we are motivated by our faith. Personally, I am prolife, against homosexual marriages, and against the government spreading my wealth. I base these precepts on my faith based on biblical principles. When you vote, you will do the same to some degree even if you are not consciously aware of it.

God has given us this great country. We are still free. We have a responsibility to be good stewards of this, the greatest country ever created. We live in a country that has been richly blessed by God.

If you still doubt that politics and religion mix I suggest reading the Old Testament especially Deuteronomy. Much of our country’s legal system is based on biblical law given by God Himself.

The bottom line is we need to select men who represent the truth, represent God, and who have good character.

Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens (Exodus 18:21).
