Senior Softball Dragonettes Honored

The Pickens High School Dragonettes softball team hosted the River Ridge Knights on the annual “Senior Night.” While the junior varsity “Nettes” managed a 6-0 shut out win, the varsity fell 9-3. The four seniors, honored post game, were: Hillary Wheeler; Kennedy McTaggart; Daniel Goss; and MaryJo Childers.The day began with the junior varsity lambasting the JV Knights. Already leading 2-0, the JV “Nettes” scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, to put the game away for good, due to a shut out effort from the defense.

The varsity game began with the Knights storming the “Nettes’” lair early, as River Ridge scored a run in each of the first innings, while holding the home team scoreless.

The Knights truly took control in the top of the third, scoring five runs to take a 7-0 lead. The “Nettes” heated up somewhat in the bottom of the third when, fittingly enough on “Senior Night” Goss’ two out RBI single scored, fellow senior, Wheeler to cut the lead to 7-1.

The “Nettes” managed to load the bases in the inning after Goss’ RBI; however, a ground out ended the inning with the home team down by six.

Pickens picked up another run in the next inning. Kayla Howard led off with a single that she turned into a double thanks to an error at first. McTaggart’s RBI double scored, courtesy runner, Paula Pickett, making the score 7-2.

The last runs of the night all came in the sixth inning. The Knights added two more runs in the top of inning. Senior, Childers’, RBI sac ground out with bases loaded scored Kym Elrod.

The seniors were then all honored in a small ceremony featuring friends and family.
