First of the Fall Season at the Jasper Farmers Market

Article submitted by Darla Huffman: The sun was shining brightly but it was cool enough to make those warm woolies that the fiber arts knitters (vendors) had for sale. I succumbed to a red cowl neck warmer that Susan Butler’s (the one who does it all from raising the sheep to knitting wonderful things) granddaughter, Daisy, was wearing. I wore it while I was at the market and liked it so much I thought what a great gift idea, a beautiful hand knitted, useful accessary that is one of a kind. I should have bought a few more.

I should have taken my own advice and gotten there early. I just missed Donny Hunters last bunch of broccoli and Roxanne Janes was all out of eggs. But several other vendors had a lot of vegetables including Wolf Scratch Farm who may be there next market (November 22) as well as selling at their farm on that day. The Pool’s had plenty of turnip and collard greens. Lettuce, sweet potatoes and more was available and Donny said he should have a lot more broccoli next time adding that perpetual caveat “If the weather…..”.

The next market will be the Thanksgiving market and we will be celebrating with free hot drinks and seasonal homemade goodies. And at the Christmas market (December 20) June McKenzie, our talented market manager, is planning to make some traditional goodies from her native Britain.

One honey vender was there, Sharon Hause was selling local honey in two different sizes and some other honey products all of which make good gifts. There was honey soap and candles made of 100% bees wax in a variety of amusing shapes; an ear of corn, a teddy bear, some things too cute to burn.

Mark your Calendar: November 22, December 6 and 20. Buy vegetables for your holiday meals and outstanding gifts. The location will be the same but the hours will be from 8:00am to 12 noon. Check out Facebook, Jasper Farmers Market/Jasper GA. Sometimes vendors will let you know if they will be there.

The Jasper Farmers Market Fall Season is held on Saturday morning from November 8 through December 20 on alternating Saturday mornings from 8:00am to 12 noon in the Park n Ride lot at Lee Newton Park on Hwy 53 in Jasper and is a project of the Pickens County Master Gardeners. See www.pickensmg.org for more information and complete vendor rules or call the County Extension Office at 706 253 8840.
