Flooding on Christmas Eve Leaves 4 Roads Closed in Pickens County

News

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms created flooding conditions in several areas in Pickens County on Christmas Eve 2015.  FetchYourNews.com spoke with Pickens County Commission Chair Rob Jones this afternoon who told us a total of 11 roads were shut down due to the flooding and issues with washed out culverts.  Jones said he was happy to report no one was trapped or injured and he was impressed with the teamwork today with all the workers responding.

Four roads are still closed at this time and the Commissioner tells us he expects these roads will be closed through next week.  The roads are Hobson Road where the pavement ends the culvert is washed out, Evans Road which is washed out on the dirt section at the creek crossing, Dean Mill Road in the section of 430 Dean Mill Road and Twin Mountain Lake Circle in two areas with water coming over the spillway and another section between 414 and 426.  As always authorities encourage you to “Turn around, don’t drown” when entering areas where you cannot tell how deep the water may be.

A state of emergency has been declared for Pickens county by Governor Nathan Deal.  Jones told us he expects it will take some time to assess the cost of the damage from the flooding and hopes the closed roads will be opened within a week.   However there is no one trapped by the closures since there are alternate routes to avoid these areas.
