The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes’ soccer teams faced off with the Lakeview Academy Lions and Lady Lions in a pair of games that ultimately were split by the two schools.
The first game of the afternoon, featuring the Dragonettes and the Lady Lions, was a struggle through the sixty minutes of play for the home squad, as Pickens was unable to gather up the momentum necessary to score. The Dragonettes lost the game by the final score of 7-0.
Following the girls’ matchup came the meeting between the Dragons and Lions. Both squads came ready to play in this game, but a goal by the Lions with 4:05 left in the first half put Lakewood on top 1-0. The Dragons answered with 35:21 left in the second half, as senior Jason Walker’s goal tied the game 1-1.
Pickens picked up the lead five minutes later when a pass from Dragon to Dragon hit one of the Lions trying to defend the play and went past the goalkeeper for an own goal. The Dragons continued pushing for more cushion and obtained just that with 14:24 left in the second half when Tyler Bell’s shot made it 3-1.
Lakewood closed the gap to 3-2 with 5:15 left in the game, but were unable to score after that. The Dragons won by the final score of 3-2.
The Dragons and Dragonettes’ next games come on Thursday, when they face Rockmart on the road.
