Team FYN Sports

In their opening round game of the “Pickens Holiday Classic,” the home team, Pickens County Dragonettes, fell to the Lady Hoyas of Harrison High School, out of West Cobb, 54-29.The Dragonettes started the game off with a 6-0 lead that grew into a 9-4 lead, with all the Dragonettes points coming from Jazmine and Danielle Goss. The Dragonettes problems began when both teams went to their benches. Lady Hoya, Nikki Hegstetter, came off the bench for Harrison to have a monster game. She finished with double double; 14 points and the same number of rebounds.

She combined with starter, Jasmine Bowles, who contributed 12 points and four rebounds herself, to give the Lady Hoyas an unstoppable post presence in the middle. They sparked a 9-2 rally that gave the visitors a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter; a lead they never relinquished.

With Bowles and Hegstetter banging in the paint like crypts and bloods, the Dragonettes were simply overpowered by the size and strength of their counterparts. The Lady Hoyas used a promising post up game to push their lead, while limiting the home team’s offense with stingy woman to woman defense and defensive rebounds.

With Hegstetter grabbing rebounds like a contestant on a Dennis Rodman reality dating show, the Lady Hoyas were able to outscore the Dragonettes 17-4 in the second quarter. The Dragonettes did not score until Danielle Goss hit a free throw with 2:22 left in the half. Megan Womack hit a three to end the field goal drought, but the visitors answered with another post up lay up to give them a 30-15 half time lead.

The second half was more of the same, as the Dragonettes could not adjust to the match up problems created by Bowles and Hegstetter, who started the second half, in the middle. The Lady Hoyas opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run, and outscored the Dragonettes 14-7 in the period to take a 44-23 lead into the fourth.

The Lady Hoyas pulled there starters with a little under five and a half minutes left in the game, before cruising to the 54-29 victory.
