The Pickens High School Dragonettes volleyball team hosted the Lady Cougars of Copper Basin, sweeping the best of five series 23-9, 25-13, and 25-17. The Dragonettes were on fire, as the night was a “Pink Out” to raise money for breast cancer awareness, as well as the “Senior Night” celebration for the Pickens program. The Dragonettes will lose six senior players: Heather Fox; Chandler Cook; Emily Martin; Emma Fox; Tiffany Richardson; and Libero Kayla Watson; as well as two senior managers Brittney Hill and Kaitlyn Cook. The Dragonettes came out breathing fire, catching the Lady Cougars tails with a 4-0 run to start game one. Copper Basin eventually fought back and tied the game at 7-7. Pickens then proceeded to pick apart Copper Basin with an 18-2 game clenching run.

Game two began much like game one as the “Nettes” drew first blood on a Heather Fox kill. The Dragonettes scored six points before the Lady Cougars paws touched the score board. With Pickens up 8-3, two straight kills by Pickens’ Taylor Howell prompted a Pickens 4-0 run. Copper Basin responded with a 5-1 run that saw the Lady Cougars cut the lead to 13-8; however the “Nettes” burned down the nets outscoring Copper Basin 12-5 to take a 2-0 lead on the night.
The Lady Cougars were different animals in game three, taking the first Copper Basin lead of the day by scoring the game’s first two points. The Dragonettes came back with a vengeance, as Heather Fox had a block so big it was reminiscent of Mutombo wagging his finger in the Omni, followed by a kill by Martin that tied the game.
Unlike the first two Dragonettes draggings, the third game was a back and forth affair, that featured eight ties, and three lead changes. The “Nettes” seemed to be pulling away as Pickens puffed its way to an 11- lead that lead to a Copper Basin time out.

Coming out of the time out, the Lady Cougars clawed back into the game with a 7-1 run that gave Copper Basin a 14-12 lead. The Dragonettes returned fire with a 3-0 run to take back the lead 15-14. The two teams traded points back and forth tying at 16-16 and 17-17, before an 8-0 run by the “Nettles” clipped the Cougars claws.
