The Pickens Dragons had a tough go of it against the Heritage Generals on Thursday, as the team managed just two hits and lost by the final score of 5-1.
The evening was a special one for the Dragons, as it was Breast Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark. To celebrate the day effectively, three breast cancer survivors: Pearl Pennington; Angie Hodge; and Judy Cunningham, threw out the first pitch. The three women were then surprised with checks of $1,200 made possible by the donations of the students and teachers at Pickens High School, who bought t-shirts supporting the cause for $10.
Once the opening ceremonies were completed, the Dragons took the field. Starting pitcher Sean Stargel held his own for most of the game, but a homerun to left field in the top of the second inning gave the Generals plenty of momentum and a lead that they would never relinquish. In fact, the Dragons’ offense hardly even challenged the Generals, as the team remained hitless in the game until the bottom of the fifth inning, when right fielder Colton Prather hit a single.
The Dragons were able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as a single by first baseman Taylor Logan brought in center fielder Dylan Childers, but it wasn’t enough to put a dent in Heritage’s lead. The Generals won the game by the final score of 5-1, putting a disappointing end to what was otherwise a joyful day.
Next on the Dragons’ schedule is a trip to Rainbow City, Alabama on Friday to take on the Westbrook Christian High School Warriors in a double-header. The games with the Warriors, who are currently 25-8-1 on the season, are scheduled to begin at 6:00 EST.
