County Recognizes Red Ribbon Week

News

Sole Commissioner Robert Jones signed a proclamation at last week’s October commissioner’s meeting designating the week of October 23rd through the 31st as Red Ribbon week. Started in 1985, the Red Ribbon campaign is one of the nation’s oldest drug prevention programs. The program began following the death of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camerena, who was killed and tortured in Mexico, and the program is continued in his honor. The campaign provides advocacy, awareness and resources for drug prevention. Gage Bennett (pictured above with Commissioner Jones) is part of the Young Marines North Metro Georgia Division and is instrumental in promoting the program through out North Georgia. The cities of Jasper and Nelson have also signed a Red Ribbon proclamation.

During the October meeting, Commissioner Jones also signed a proclamation designating the week of October 7th through the 13th Mental Health Awareness Week.
