The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes traveled to White County on Friday night to face the White Warriors and Lady Warriors and had moderate success, as the Dragonettes defeated the Lady Warriors 43-28 and the Dragons came out on the losing end of a 78-60 game.The opening matchup of the evening pitted the Dragonettes against the Lady Warriors in a battle that would be decided fairly early on.
Pickens put up the points in the opening quarter of play, starting the game on a 10-1 run en route to outscoring White 17-8. The second quarter was much of the same for the Nettes, overcoming a 6-4 start by the Lady Warriors to go into halftime with a 23-16 lead.
The third quarter would help the Dragonettes secure a victory in this one thanks to the team putting up fourteen points, giving them a 37-23 lead going into the fourth quarter.
White did what it could to close the gap, but it just was not enough on this night. The Dragonettes would win the game by the final score of 43-28.
Sarah Smith and Haley Kalson led the Dragonettes in scoring in the victory, each recording twelve points. Danielle Goss got the job done rebounding the ball for Pickens, leading the team with twelve rebounds.
Two Pickens players—Goss and Kadie Mullinax—had five assists in the game. Haley Kalson also put the pressure on the Lady Warriors’ offense, finishing the game with three steals.
Next up was the game between the Dragons and the Warriors, a meeting that would see Pickens put up a good fight but ultimately come up short.
The first quarter saw the Dragons fall behind 25-11, and a fifteen-point outburst by the Warriors in the second quarter left the Pickens’ fans that made the trip to White quite concerned due to a 40-29 deficit at the half.
Pickens made the game very interesting in the third quarter thanks to a 15-9 run, which cut White’s advantage to 49-44. The Warriors eventually woke up and got on a run of its own, putting up nine points compared to the Dragons’ two to end the quarter and put Pickens in a 58-46 hole.
The Dragons did what they could to close the gap in the fourth quarter, but it just was not enough to close the gap. White would win the game by the final score of 78-60.
Tyjai Howell led the Dragons in scoring and rebounding with sixteen points and six rebounds, respectively. David Culbreth also got the job done for the Dragons, scoring thirteen points and recording three assists in the loss.
Chris Leicht had no problem dishing the ball out to his teammates, finishing the game with a team-high five assists.
The Dragons and Dragonettes’ next set of games are on Tuesday, December 4th on the road against the Sonoraville Phoenix and Lady Phoenix. The girls’ game is set to tip-off at 6:00 with the boys’ game following its conclusion.
