This morning at approximately 6:45 a.m., the Pickens Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Hwy 136 at the intersection of Jay Moss Lane in reference to an accident involving a Pickens County School Bus. Deputies on the scene said it appeared the bus was hit by a work truck while the bus was making a left turn from Highway 136 onto Jay Moss Lane. As a precaution everyone on the bus, 10 students and the bus driver, were transported to Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. At this time it appears no one was seriously injured and all the parents of the children involved have been made aware.

The students were a mixture of Jasper Middle School and Pickens High School students. As of ten this morning all but two students and the driver had been released per Superintendent Dr. Lula Perry. She stated that Transportation Director Bruce Godfrey is staying at the hospital until all have been cleared.

Director of personnel Lisa Galloway stated they don’t anticipate anyone being admitted to the hospital but admits at this point with the remaining three at the hospital they’re not sure of the extent of, or if they have, any injuries.

Because the EMT’s on-scene recommended they be transported, all were taken to Piedmont mostly as precautionary measures. Perry reported,

“Our concern was making sure our children are checked out thoroughly.”

Galloway and Perry had also been to the hospital to check on everyone and Perry said,

“Piedmont was wonderful in working with us.”

Pickens County Schools Transportation Department immediately began notifying parents when the wreck occurred and Perry commended them for their prompt response.

Investigation matters have been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol.
