At Thursday’s Board of Education meeting the Board recognized students in 7th and 8th grade who achieved perfect scores on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and a spelling bee winner. Georgia law requires all students in grades one through eight to take the test in the content areas of reading/English language arts, and math. In grades three through eight, students are also assessed in science and social studies.

The following students received a perfect score on the reading test: Autumn Andrews, Hannah Ballard, Elizabeth Cohen, Dawson Haithcock, Jackson Hodge, Brittany Alexander, Makayla Bailey, Cheyenne Buchanan, Hannah Bugg, Mitzi Fabian, Devin Grant, Natalie Klein, Matthew Ledford, Christopher McKercher, Cole Miller, Alexander Pagel, Elizabeth Perry, Madison Smith, Jesse Vaughn, Noah Weaver and William Young.

Congratulations on a job well done!

The Board also honored the winner of the regional spelling bee, Miss Brooke Bell. Brooke competed against 49 other students from 13 other schools in surrounding counties. Her winning word was “kwashiorkor,” defined as severe malnutrition in infants and children especially of impoverished regions caused by a diet low in protein. Brooke is a fifth grade student at Hill City Elementary and the daughter of Daniel and Christie Bell. The Superintendent and other board members were very impressed with her achievement.
