Pumpkin is Champion at the Jasper Farmers Market

Article submitted by Darla Huffman: Roxanne Janes unique pumpkin dessert won the Pumpkin vs. Sweet Potato competition; the voting public liked her cute little individual, ghostly, mini-cupcake sized cheesecakes since they were also delicious. As Champion, pumpkin will retain this title until next year’s rematch.
Ruth Poole, First Runner-up, brought a traditional pumpkin pie made the old fashioned way starting with an actual pumpkin and a made from scratch crust.
Helen Thompson won Second runner-up and Sweet Potato Favorite with a classic sweet potato pie. All of these winners were regular vendors at the market, although anyone was eligible to enter, and they all have their baking skills for sale at the market most every week.
With 16 entries there was plenty of free samples to taste and food left over, a rarity at a farmers market event and we hope there won’t be any food left over next Saturday when there will be free food to share as a thank you to everyone who has help make this market a success. Come out and help us celebrate the close of the 15th year at the End of the Season Party to be held on October 25 during the regular hours from 7:30 to 12 noon.
The Winter Season will begin on November 8 for four alternating Saturdays, November 22, December 5 and 20. There will be fall vegetables and holiday shopping. The location will be the same but the hours will be from 8:00am to 12 noon.
The Jasper Farmers Market is held on Saturday morning (April through October) from 7:30 am to 12 noon and from November 8 through December 20 on alternating Saturday mornings from 8:00am to 12 noon in the Park n Ride lot at Lee Newton Park on Hwy 53 in Jasper and is a project of the Pickens County Master Gardeners.
