Pickens County – StormReady
Community, Featured Stories, News November 24, 2014 , by Lisa Pritchard
Pickens County received its StormReady Certificate during the November BOC meeting, making it one of 86 Counties in Georgia that is recognized as StormReady. Americans deal with severe weather and when it happens it helps if you’re ready. Americans face an average of 100,000 thunderstorms, 10,000 of which are severe; 5,000 floods; 1,000 tornadoes; and an average of 2 landfalling deadly hurricanes. These storms bring dangerous conditions and we also face winter storms, high winds, wild fires and other deadly weather conditions.
The Pickens County community is ready for the weather with the National Weather Service’s StormReady® program. Meteorologist Kent Frantz presented Pickens County Board of Commission Chair, Mr. Rob Jones along with Bob Howard with EOC, with its StormReady Certification & signage. StormReady, a program that began in Tulsa, OK, in 1999, helps arm America’s communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property. This program enables community leaders and emergency managers to strengthen local safety programs.

Weather related disasters lead to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $14 billion in damage. Pickens County also offers the community the Code Red Weather Warning system. You can follow this link: Click here to sign up for Code Red or sign up in person at:
