Dragons Lose An Overtime Thriller To Cartersville

Last Friday, the Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Hurricanes of Cartersville in region 7AAAA action. Pickens, looked to end their string of tough ball games and pick up a much needed win and split the season series against the Canes.The start of this game was back and forth with both teams starting slow then picking up the pace. Cartersville held the lead after one, 11-7. The second quarter, much like the girls game prior, saw more scoring as the Canes outscored the Dragons 14-12, to take a 25-19 lead into halftime.

Cartersville was able to extend their lead to 36-28 after outscoring Pickens in the third, 11-9. An exciting fourth quarter was yet to come. The Dragons still had fight left in them and outscored the Canes in the final quarter 19-11 to send the ball game to overtime. Cartersville outscored Pickens in the extra period 9-6 however as a desperation three pointer to tie the game was blocked as time expired and the Canes escaped with the win, 56-53.

Pickens is now 10-10 on the season and 2-7 in region play

Leading the way for the Dragons Friday were:

Holden Roop: 18 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals

Shannon Brooks: 13 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds, and a steal

Trent Rizoti: 10 points, and 4 rebounds

Travis Huffman: 5 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, and a steal

Walker Lawrence: 5 points, 1 assist, and 4 rebounds

The Dragons will be on the road this week for two important games in terms of seeding for the region tournament. Tomorrow night Pickens will travel to take on the Heritage Generals. Heritage is 8-1 in region play with their only loss coming at the hands of the Dragons in the Dragons Den earlier this season. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30.
