Yesterday, The Dragons varsity basketball team traveled up to north GA to take on the Bruins of Northwest Whitfield. Pickens, came into the game looking to avenge a tough two point loss suffered at home at the hands of the Bruins and keep momentum going from their win last Friday over the Bobcats.The first quarter was slowed by a number of fouls called on both teams. The Bruins held the lead after the opening quarter, 29-13. The second quarter saw it’s share of fouls and points. Northwest Whitfield outscored the Dragons 23-21, to take a 52-34 lead into halftime.
The Bruins defense played a major role in the third as they only gave up 10 points to the Pickens offense and Northwest Whitfield added 26 points to their total to take a 78-44 lead into the fourth and final quarter. The Bruins would lead throughout the game as they outscored the Dragons 14-12 in the fourth to seal the win, 92-56. Pickens is now 11-12 on the season and 3-9 in region play.
Leading the way for the Dragons last night were:
Walker Lawrence: 13 points, 2 assists, and 6 rebounds
Shannon Brooks: 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals
Travis Huffman: 8 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound
Joseph Gossett: 7 points and 2 rebounds
Sam Davis scored 6 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, a steal, and a block, Blake Gorth and Trent Rizoti each had 4 points as well as 4 & 3 rebounds between them.
Pickens now will get ready for their region game against the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield on Friday night. It will be Senior Night for the Dragons. Tip off scheduled for 8:30 pm.
