The Pickens High School Dragons baseball team continued the summer’s hot streak, remaining undefeated on the summer. The Dragons traveled to Cartersville to take on the Wildcats of Woodland High School. Pickens posted a 3-0 shutout victory over the home team, despite all the runs coming in the first inning. Pickens’ Colton Prather pitched a complete game shutout with 13 strike outs, including five of the last six batters he faced. The game began with Pickens’ lead-off batter, Eric Justice, hitting a seeing eye single right past the short stop’s outstretched glove. Cameron Gregory walked, which set up both Justice and Gregory being able to steal second and third on an errant pitch during Dylan Childers’ at bat.

Childers’ RBI single drove in Justice. After two strikeouts, the Dragons scored the last runs of the day with Taylor Logan’s two run single, making the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

The rest of the game would be a defensive struggle as the Wildcats could not claw out of the hole the Dragons buried the home team in during the top of the first inning. Woodland’s batters simply had no prayer for Pickens’ Prather.

Prather did not face more than four batters in any inning until the bottom of the sixth. Three straight walks, including a hitting of the lead off batter so hard that it was rumored to be felt in Jasper, loaded the bases for the home team. However, two straight strike outs followed by a fielder’s choice at second ended the inning and the scoring threat for the Wildcats.

Prather was grand in the seventh, with three straight K’s, preserving the 3-0 Dragons’ win.

Head coach, Jason Nunn, spoke with FYN briefly after the game about the Dragons’ hot summer.

“The big picture right now, you know we’ve probably guy four or five guys that aren’t even playing with us right now. They’re playing some travel ball or maybe tired from football or whatever. So mainly for our summer program this gives us an opportunity to get some young guys in some games and let them experience what a varsity game feels like and some of the kids have played pretty well. I think right now that puts us at 17-0 on the summer. So we’re really playing well this summer.”
