Nettes Win OT Thriller Get Ready For State Tournament

Yesterday, the Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to Southeast Whitfield one more time to take on the Lady Generals of Heritage in the 7AAAA Region Tournament Girls Consolation Game to determine the region’s third seed. These two teams split during the regular season and the third meeting did not disappoint.In the opening quarter, the two teams traded the lead back and forth. The Lady Generals were able to seize the lead after one, 16-14 over the Nettes. Heritage took a ten point lead in the second quarter at one point. Pickens cut that lead in half prior to the break but still trailed, 31-26.

The Nettes defense stood tall in the third quarter only allowing 6 points in the frame as Pickens took the lead from the Lady Generals 40-37 going to the fourth. Both defense were stingy in the fourth as Heritage outscored the Nettes 9-6 to tie the game at 46 and force overtime. Pickens held on in the overtime period as Senior Haley Kalson stepped to the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the win for the Nettes, 53-49.

Leading the way for Pickens yesterday were:

Haley Kalson: 17 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals

Autumn Young: 15 points, an assist, and a rebound

Kaitlin Redman: 6 points, and 6 rebounds

Shelby Cook/Mackenzie Hampton: 4 points, and 5 rebounds each

Makayla Payne: 3 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal

With the win yesterday, the Nettes will be the #3 seed for 7AAAA. 7AAAA will play 8AAAA in the opening round of the state tournament. Pickens will travel to Gainesville to take on the #2 seed from 8AAAA and former region foe, the Lady War Eagles of Chestatee. Tip off for the first round match up is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 pm.
