‘Nettes Finish 2nd In Region After Physical Game, Host Troup Next Friday In State Tournament

It was Region Championship Friday as the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip to Dalton one last time. This time, it was to face off with the #1 seeded Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. Pickens, had already earned a home game in the first round of the 4-A State Tournament, but wanted to cap the week off with a region title.

 

In the opening quarter, the ‘Nettes got a couple of three pointers to drop to help propel them to the lead going to the 2nd, 13-6. In a tightly contested, low scoring 1st half, each team proved they belonged in this championship game. Northwest Whitfield outscored the ‘Nettes in the 2nd 11-7, but Pickens maintained the lead, 20-17 going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, there was just a total of 13 points scored between the two teams as both defenses played very well throughout the game. Despite being outscored 7-6 in the quarter by the Lady Bruins, the ‘Nettes still held on to the lead going to the 4th, 26-24. The lead would change several times in the 4th, but in the closing seconds, Northwest Whitfield was able to get a late basket to give them the win, 36-34.

Pickens, will now get prepared to host the Troup County Lady Tigers out of region 5 in the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament. The game will be this coming Friday, with game time still to be determined. Tickets will be $7 per GHSA rule.

History Made With ‘Nettes Semi-Final Win, Play Northwest Whitfield For Region Title Tonight

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was back at Southeast Whitfield for their 2nd game in the 6-AAAA Region Tournament. This time, it was a semi-final match up with the #3 seeded Heritage Lady Generals. Pickens, won both games during the regular season, but a win here, & the ‘Nettes would host the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament.

 

The first quarter, had a lot of action, and a lot of back and forth scoring. While Heritage started off with the lead early in the opening minutes, Pickens was able to take the lead going to the 2nd, 12-11. In the 2nd, the defense for the ‘Nettes stiffened up, & made it really tough for the Lady Generals. Using a 15-5 quarter run, Pickens went into the half with a 27-16 lead.

 

The defensive effort in the 2nd quarter, carried over to the 3rd for the ‘Nettes as they would double the scoring output of Heritage, 16-8, to stretch their lead going to the 4th, 43-24. The 4th quarter, saw the Lady Generals try for one final push. Heritage, would outscore Pickens 19-9 in the final quarter, but it would not be enough as the ‘Nettes came away with the win, 52-43.

For the ‘Nettes, the win gives them a home game for the first round of the 4-A State Tournament. Even with the ‘Nettes storied past, which includes several state titles, this will be the first ever tournament game that Pickens will be hosting. Pickens, has one more game at Southeast Whitfield this week as they will play the #1 seeded Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins tonight for the 6-AAAA Region Championship. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.

‘Nettes Advance To 4-A State Tournament, Face Heritage In Semi-Finals On Thursday

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Dalton to take part in the first round of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield. Pickens, came in as the #2 seed and was matched up with the #7 seed & host team, the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders. The winner, would advance to the region semi-finals, & to the 2018 4-A State Tournament.

 

The 1st quarter, started off a little slow for the ‘Nettes to begin things. Pickens, got a big pick me up to end the frame as Junior Torie Williams nailed a buzzer beater from half court to give the ‘Nettes a 17-8 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens settled in and was able to get things going on both ends of the floor. Using a 23-7 quarter advantage, the ‘Nettes took a 40-15 lead over Southeast Whitfield going to the break.

 

Pickens, carried their solid play from the 2nd quarter over to the 3rd as they extended their lead over the Lady Raiders. With the help of a 21-9 run, the ‘Nettes took a 61-24 lead going to the 4th and final quarter. With a 12-10 quarter run in the 4th, the ‘Nettes sealed the win, 73-34.

With the win, the ‘Nettes have secured a spot in the 2018 4-A State Tournament, & have advanced to the semi-finals of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament where they will meet the Heritage Lady Generals. Pickens, won both meetings during the regular season, but will need to win this one if they want to host a state tournament game. Tip off is scheduled for 4 pm on Thursday. Game will be played at Southeast Whitfield.

‘Nettes Get OT Win Over 6-A River Ridge To Close Regular Season, Start Region Tournament Monday

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Knights of River Ridge out of the 6-A classification for the finale of the 2017-18 regular season. Pickens, came into this game with an overall record of 18-5, while the Lady Knights rolled in with a 17-7 record. It looked like it would be a good one, and that was the case.

 

The 1st quarter, was a back and forth frame as both squads traded buckets. Pickens, got the best of the opening quarter taking a 15-12 lead over River Ridge, heading to the 2nd. In the 2nd, it remained close as the ‘Nettes stretched out it’s narrow lead on the Lady Knights ever so slightly. Using an 11-8 quarter run, Pickens took a 26-20 lead into the half.

 

The 3rd quarter again saw Pickens add to it’s lead. A 15-11 quarter advantage for the home team gave the ‘Nettes a 41-31 lead over River Ridge heading to the 4th. In the 4th, the Lady Knights went on a massive run. They outscored Pickens, 22-12 in the final quarter of regulation, with the final two coming in the final seconds to tie the game at 53, sending this game to overtime. In the overtime period, the ‘Nettes made the most of their scoring chances, having to comeback from a small deficit, to come away with a 65-61 win.

Pickens, wraps up the regular season with a record of 19-5. They will be the #2 seed in the 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield. The ‘Nettes, will play the #7 seed, Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders in the first round on Monday at 7:30 pm. Winner will advance to the 4-A State Tournament.

‘Nettes Finish Region Schedule At 9-3, Host 6-A River Ridge in Final Regular Season Test

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Dalton to take on the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders in their final 6-AAAA region ball game before the region tournament next week. Pickens, looked to regain momentum after a tough overtime loss to non-region opponent, Chestatee, this past Saturday.

 

In the 1st, the ‘Nettes got off to a quick start on both sides of the ball. Using defense to lead to offense, Pickens held a 16-3 lead over the Lady Raiders going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, it would be more of the same from the ‘Nettes as they would add to their lead. Using a 20-7 quarter run, Pickens took a 36-10 lead over Southeast Whitfield going to the break.

 

The 2nd unit & younger girls for Pickens got some very valuable playing time in the 2nd half of this one & they faired very well. A 14-6 quarter run for the ‘Nettes, extended their lead going to the 4th to 50-16. After closing things out in the 4th, Pickens took this one, 58-28.

The ‘Nettes, finish the region portion of their schedule at 9-3. They will be the #2 seed heading into the 6-AAAA Region Tournament at Southeast Whitfield next week. There is one more game prior to that however as Pickens will host the 17-6 River Ridge Lady Knights out of the 6-A classification on Friday. Tip off scheduled for 6 pm.

‘Nettes Fall In Overtime To Chestatee, Travel To Southeast Whitfield Tomorrow

On Saturday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Chestatee Lady War Eagles to the Dragons Den for a non-region tilt. Saturday, was also special because it was Senior Night. The last time these two teams met, it was at the very start of the season, & Pickens, came away with a close victory.

 

This ball game started out slow for both teams as buckets would be tough to come by in this opening frame. Both squads finally got things going towards the end of the first as the Lady War Eagles took a 9-4 lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd. Pickens, would pull momentum over to their side in the the 2nd as they would use a 10-4 quarter advantage to take the lead heading into the half, 14-13.

 

In the 3rd, their was much more scoring as both teams finally found something that worked for them. An 18-11 quarter run gave Pickens a 32-24 lead over Chestatee going to the 4th. In the 4th, the Lady War Eagles used a 17-9 run to tie things up with the ‘Nettes at 41, to send us to overtime. In the extra period, Chestatee outscored Pickens 8-4, as a desperation three as time expired would not fall for the ‘Nettes as the Lady War Eagles took this one, 48-45.

‘Nettes Get 4 In Double Figures In Win At Ridgeland, Host Chestatee For Senior Day

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip to Rossville, Ga to take on the Ridgeland Lady Panthers. The ‘Nettes, came into the game still buzzing after sweeping the Heritage Lady Generals on Tuesday, and looked to continue their momentum against the Lady Panthers.

 

In the first, it would be a slow start initially, but picked up as the quarter went on. Pickens, gathered a 16-9 lead over Ridgeland going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes offense found more consistency, and it reflected on the scoreboard. Using a 21-15 quarter run, Pickens took a 37-24 lead over the Lady Panthers heading into the break.

 

The second half, would belong to the road team in green. The ‘Nettes, would turn it up on both sides of the ball in the 3rd, to increase their lead over Ridgeland. Using a 22-6 quarter advantage, Pickens, held a 59-30 lead over the Lady Panthers going to the 4th. In the 4th, as was the case for most of the 2nd half, the younger girls got in and played very well for Pickens. The ‘Nettes, closed things out using an 18-12 run, to get the win, 77-42, over Ridgeland.

‘Nettes Sweep Lady Generals, Take Over 2nd Place In 6-AAAA

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, hosted the Heritage Lady Generals inside the Dragons Den. This game, was critical as far as region standings were concerned as the winner of this one, would take over sole possession of 2nd place, with the region tournament fast approaching. The last time these two met, the ‘Nettes came away with a big road victory.

 

It was a slow start for both teams in the first quarter as shots were just refusing to fall. Mid-way through the frame, the scoring picked up, & it would be Pickens taking a 15-8 lead over Heritage going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, again, points were hard to come by. The Lady Generals, used a 10-6 quarter run, to trim the ‘Nettes lead down to 21-18, going to the break.

 

The 3rd, saw back and forth action as they score remained close. Pickens, used a slim 14-13 quarter advantage over the Lady Generals to take a 35-31 lead into the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes, were able to pull away using a 22-9 quarter advantage to get a big win, 57-40.

‘Nettes Suffer First Loss In Final Home Game Of 2017

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins, in a big time region match up. Entering the game, the Lady Bruins were 8-1 overall, & 4-0 in region play, While the ‘Nettes, were 8-0 overall, & also 4-0 in region play. This, would prove to be the toughest game so far for Pickens.

 

The first quarter, was high scoring from the get go. Both teams found success very early & the scoreboard reflected that. Heading into the 2nd, the Lady Bruins held a 20-14 lead over the ‘Nettes. The second quarter, was back and forth, & even throughout the frame. Northwest Whitfield outscored Pickens 15-14, to help take a 35-28 lead into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, would end up being the determining factor in this one. The Lady Bruins, would use a 29-14 quarter run, to build a 64-42 lead going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes, would close out the game on a strong note as they outscored Northwest Whitfield 16-14. The final score in this one, 88-58 Lady Bruins.

‘Nettes Start Holiday Classic With Big Win Over Christian Heritage

Earlier this afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, once again found themselves in Fannin competing in a tournament. This time, it was the Mountain Top Holiday Classic. Pickens, drew the 9-1 Christian Heritage Lady Lions for their first game. The ‘Nettes, were looking to end a two game skid after an 8-0 start to the season.

 

The first quarter, saw a back and forth frame as the two teams, who were a combined 17-3 coming into the game, traded bucket for bucket. The Lady Lions of Christian Heritage held a slim lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd, 9-8. It would be more of the same in the 2nd quarter as neither team good gain a sizable lead. We would head to the break, all tied up at 19 a piece.

 

In the 3rd, the trend continued from the first half with both teams staying neck and neck with each other. Christian Heritage, used a 16-14 quarter advantage to take a slim 35-33 lead over Pickens into the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the defense for the ‘Nettes would come up big & by using a 17-10 quarter run, Pickens stunned the Lady Lions & sealed a 50-45 win.

‘Nettes Drop Tough Region Game To Northwest Whitfield

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Tunnel Hill to take on the region leading Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins in the 2nd game of their home & home series. In the first meeting, the Lady Bruins came away with the win. The ‘Nettes were looking to return the favor on Northwest Whitfield’s court.

 

In the opening quarter, both offenses were able to get going despite maybe not having quality practice time due to the weather. Northwest Whitfield, held the lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd, 21-17. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens cut the Lady Bruins lead in half. Using a 12-10 quarter run, the ‘Nettes only trailed 31-29 going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, Northwest Whitfield would look to widen their lead on the ‘Nettes. The Lady Bruins, outscored Pickens in the 3rd, 20-13, to take a 9 point lead going to the 4th, 51-42. The 4th quarter, was a real tightly contested frame as the Lady Bruins were able to hold on after a 21-19 quarter run, to get the win, 72-61.

‘Nettes Bounce Back With Non-Region Win Over Sonoraville

Earlier today, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Calhoun to take on the Sonoraville Lady Phoenix. Pickens, came into the game sporting a small, two game losing streak & looked to right the ship before getting back to region play. The last time these two teams met, the ‘Nettes bested the Lady Phoenix by 12 in Jasper.

 

In the 1st quarter, it was the home team that would get off to the fast start. The Lady Phoenix, held a 17-12 lead over Pickens going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes offense woke up. Using a 16-9 quarter advantage, Pickens took the lead from Sonoraville going to the half, 28-26.

 

Pickens, kept up the stellar play from the 2nd quarter during the 3rd quarter as they stretched out their lead. Using a 19-9 run, the ‘Nettes held a 47-35 lead going to the 4th. In the 4th, despite getting outscored 16-13 in the frame, Pickens held on to come away with the win, 60-51.

Pickens, is now 15-4 overall & sitting in 3rd in 6-AAAA at 6-3. The ‘Nettes, will be back home on Tuesday night, hosting the 2nd place team in 6-AAAA, the Heritage Lady Generals. Pickens, already holds a victory over the Lady Generals, & this game will go a long way to determine seeding in the upcoming region tournament with just 3 region games left for the ‘Nettes. Tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.

‘Nettes Fall To Jefferson In Sweet 16

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the nearly two hour trip to Jefferson County to take on the Jefferson Lady Dragons in the Sweet 16 of the 4-A Girls State Basketball Tournament. Pickens, was riding a wave of momentum after hosting a state playoff game for the first time since 2000 last week, & looked to continue that momentum on the road against Jefferson.

 

In the opening quarter, both teams went back and forth early on with the ‘Nettes taking an early lead on the home team. Midway through the frame, the height advantage Jefferson had on Pickens began to become a little bit of a factor as the Lady Dragons used it to help cause a couple of turnovers to take a 17-9 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes were finding good looks on offense, but the shots just would not fall for the team in green as Jefferson extended it’s lead. Using a 20-7 quarter advantage, the Lady Dragons took a 37-16 lead over Pickens into the half.

 

The 3rd quarter, saw the offense from the ‘Nettes start to get things going as they started to see the shots go in & were getting to the free throw line. Jefferson, barely outscored Pickens in that third quarter, 15-13, and held a lead of 52-29, going to the 4th. Pickens, ended the game on a strong note, outscoring the Lady Dragons 11-10 in the final quarter of play. Jefferson took this one, 62-4o.

Looking ahead for Pickens, they will be losing three key seniors in Shelby Cook, Mackenzie Hampton, & Allie Stephens, but will be bringing back a lot of experience next season. Six of the ‘Nettes seven losses on the season were to eventual state playoff teams. 22 wins is the most a ‘Nettes team has finished with in a single season in quite some time. The arrow is pointing upward when it comes to Dragonettes basketball.

‘Nettes Get Big Road Region Win Over Lady Generals, Now 7-0

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to Ringgold to take on the Lady Generals of Heritage in a big 6-AAAA region game. Coming into the ball game, Pickens, hadn’t played since the Gilmer game due to the snow, & came in 6-0, and in a three-way tie for 1st in the region. Heritage, came in 5-2, & also a part of that three-way tie at the top of the region standings.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams got things going offensively as buckets would be traded back and forth. Heading in to the 2nd, the ‘Nettes held a 17-16 lead over Heritage. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens, as they have a few times early in the season, held a good Lady Generals team to single digits in the frame as they outscored Heritage 14-9 to take a 31-25 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, that high powered Lady General offense got things going. Heritage, would outscore the ‘Nettes 20-12 in the 3rd to take a 45-43 lead going to the 4th & the final quarter. In the 4th quarter, Pickens, made a 22-13 run using some timely buckets and clutch free throws to come away with the huge road win, 65-58.

Pickens, are now 7-0 on the season & in 1st place in 6-AAAA at 3-0. The ‘Nettes will be back in action on Friday as they host the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland in another region contest. Tip off scheduled for 6 pm.

‘Nettes Dominate 2nd Half In Win Over Rival Lady Cats

This past Friday night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled up 515 for their 2nd game of three scheduled regular season meetings with their rival, the Gilmer Lady Cats. The last time these two teams met, it was a non-region affair during the Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament held in Fannin. The ‘Nettes won that one by one point at the buzzer.

 

In the opening quarter of this one, both teams saw success on the offensive end, but it would be Pickens who came out of the 1st with the lead. The ‘Nettes held a 14-8 advantage going to the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, the quarter scoring for both teams were fairly even. Pickens outscored the Lady Cats 11-9, to give them a 25-17 lead going into the break.

 

The 2nd half would belong to the young ladies in green. In the 3rd, the ‘Nettes worked tirelessly on both ends of the floor, leading to a 15-4 quarter advantage. Going to the 4th, Pickens held the lead over Gilmer, 40-21. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes closed out the game with a 17-3 run, giving up just 7 points in the 2nd half. Pickens moved to 6-0 overall & 2-0 in region with a 57-24 win over the Lady Cats.

Pickens, will now begin to prepare for a big test as they will host the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield next Friday. Tip-off for this big game is set for 7  pm.

‘Nettes Earn Sweep Over LaFayette, Host Gilmer Friday Night

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip up to LaFayette to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in a 6-AAAA match up. Pickens, won the first meeting between these two teams, & came in winners of five in a row.

 

In the opening quarter, the defense for the ‘Nettes made it’s mark early on this game as it helped transition to buckets on the offensive end. Going to the 2nd, Pickens held a 14-4 advantage over LaFayette. In the 2nd, the defensive effort from the first quarter carried over, & the ‘Nettes were able to stretch their lead on the Lady Ramblers. Using a 20-10 quarter advantage, Pickens took a 34-14 lead into the break.

 

In the 2nd half, the ‘Nettes continued their solid play from the first two quarters. The 3rd quarter, would end up being the closest quarter in terms of scoring as Pickens outscored the Lady Ramblers 18-11, but still held a lead of 52-25 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes finished the ball game strong with the 2nd unit & younger girls in. Pickens, would close the game on a 22-3 run. The ‘Nettes, picked up the win, 74-28.

Torie Williams: 15 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, & 1 steal

Sarah Morris: 8 points, 1 assist, 4 rebounds, & 1 steal

Allie Stephens: 6 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, & 1 steal

Shelby Cook: 5 points, 2 assists, & 6 rebounds

Ansley Parker: 5 points, 1 assist, & 2 rebounds

 

Pickens, is now 14-2 overall on the season & now 6-1 in region play after last night’s win. They have now tied Northwest Whitfield in the win column with 6 victories. The ‘Nettes, will now turn their focus to Friday night as they will welcome their rivals from just up 515, the Gilmer Lady Cats, to the Dragons Den for a region meeting. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.
