Jasper’s downtown Christmas festivities began mid-afternoon on the bandstand in front of the courthouse with Pickens High School’s Brass. Performers leading up to the tree lighting and parade included the PHS Show Choir, Samantha Chumley, Jasper Middle School’s Girl’s Ensemble, Emily Wheeler, Gospel Community Christmas Choir led by Justin Davis, Andy Thacker, and the Jasper Young Singers. Traditional Christmas songs were performed as well as a few contemporary tunes.Children enjoyed games, face painting and bounce houses. A crowd gathered in front of Moore’s Furniture to have free sketches done and to visit Santa inside the store. Food and beverage vendors were set up along Main Street. I walked the streets enjoying the sights and sounds of the Christmas season while munching on an awesome “Boston Dawg” from Crazee Dawgs, a vendor from Woodstock. In addition to hot dogs, attendees also enjoyed hot cider and cocoa, kettle corn, boiled peanuts and other snacks.

Hundreds of people lined Main Street by 5:30, eagerly awaiting the tree lighting. A few minutes later, as the Gospel Community Christmas Choir sang “O Holy Night,” the glorious tree was lit.

Shortly after the tree lighting, the “Home for the Holidays”-themed parade began. The vehicles and floats were adorned with Christmas lights and decorations. Participants in the parade included the PHS Marching Band, dance troupes, local businesses and citizens, and special guests Santa and Mrs. Clause.

The day’s festivities were an enjoyable and lovely kick start to the Christmas season for everyone who attended.
