J-Hill’s Two Minute Drill

Opinion, Team FYN Sports

We’ve got five big topics in the world of sports to discuss with just two minutes (or a few more) to work with, so let’s get going!Revisiting the Super Bowl – In case you didn’t realize it, Super Bowl XLVI took place last Sunday, and what a Super Bowl it was. Before we look at the actual game aspect, let’s take a look at the entertainment portion that so many watch the game for. First, the commercials: while as a whole it was a pretty forgettable series of commercials, there were several that stood out, including the M&M’s “It’s Just My Shell” commercial and the Chrysler “It’s Halftime, America” commercial featuring Clint Eastwood. Then there was the halftime show featuring Madonna with a little help from her friends, which in my book wasn’t the best in Super Bowl history but definitely not the worst. Now to the game itself, which was one of the best that I’ve ever watched. The Patriots fought hard and looked in prime position to win, but once again Eli Manning brought the Giants back from behind thanks to a miracle throw, this time to Mario Manningham. It was an excellent game that in my mind both solidified Eli’s argument as an elite NFL quarterback while not affecting Tom Brady’s status as the best quarterback of this decade and one of the greatest winners to ever play the game. Super Bowls have a tendency to sometimes get out of hand and become a snoozefest, but its clear that any game that goes like this one will be remembered as a classic.

Kobe Surpasses Shaq – Kobe Bryant surpassed another milestone in his Hall of Fame career earlier this week when he moved to fifth on the all-time scoring list by passing none other than Shaquille O’Neal, Bryant’s teammate from 1996 to 2004. Some aren’t willing to give the Black Mamba a lot of credit for the success he’s achieved in his time on the court, but in my mind he’s one of the top 10 NBA players of all-time and is in a virtual tie with Magic Johnson as the greatest Laker ever. While Bryant’s legacy will be a lingering question in the future, one thing is clear: Los Angeles would have made the biggest mistake in franchise history by trading Bryant instead of O’Neal eight years ago.

LeBron’s Twitter Troubles – Miami Heat star LeBron James found himself in some hot water this week due to a tweet he had concerning Blake Griffin’s fantastic dunk on Thunder center Kendrick Perkins. It seems that Perkins was not amused about one of James’s tweets that said “Dunk of the Year!! @blakegriffin just dunked on Kendrick Perkins so hard!! Wow!! I guess I’m #2 now. Move over #6”, saying in essence that James made the statement just to grab attention. LeBron refused to apologize for the comment, and although I haven’t always supported The Player Formerly Known As The Akron Hammer’s actions, this one was right. Perkins had no reason to get upset at LeBron for the tweet; LeBron didn’t include Perkins in a way that was intended to embarrass him, so therefore he did nothing wrong.

Calhoun Takes Time Off – The UConn Huskies’ men’s basketball team received a significant blow on Tuesday when it was announced that head coach Jim Calhoun would take a medical leave of absence due to back problems caused by spinal stenosis. Calhoun, who has battled cancer and stomach issues over the past few years, isn’t exactly sure when he will return to coach the Huskies, but it will not be for today’s game against Syracuse. Calhoun ranks among Coach K and Roy Williams as the best current basketball coaches in the game, so hopefully his medical issues will go away, allowing the coach to continue breaking records at the school he has coached since 1986.

Sauced: The Knowshon Moreno Story – Just when I think it can’t get any worse to be a Georgia fan, a story concerning former Bulldogs running back Knowshon Moreno’s arrest for DUI hits ESPN and the Internet. It seems that Moreno, who has failed to live up to expectations so far in Denver thanks in large part due to injuries, was pulled over going 70 mph in a zone that was normally a 65 mph zone but was lowered to 45 due to construction and given a roadside sobriety test, which he failed. The saddest part of this story? Moreno’s tag on his car is “SAUCED”; Sometimes the life of a sportswriter is just too easy. While I do believe the license plate on Moreno’s car played a huge role in the police officer pulling him over, I don’t think it was the actual plate that did this Dawg in, but rather the tag frame around it which read “I Was Recruited By Mark Richt”. Too soon?
