The Pickens Dragons’ baseball team got the job done in its matchup with the Murray Indians on Monday afternoon at Dragon Field, defeating the Indians by a final score of 9-4.The Indians started the scoring in the opening inning of play with two runs, but the Dragons responded with two of runs of its own in the bottom of the first thanks to RBIs by first baseman Jesse Decker and right fielder Colton Prather.

Pickens took the lead in the second inning thanks to a double by third baseman Eric Justice that brought in teammate Chance McEntyre. A run by the Indians in the third tied the game 3-3 in the third inning, which stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth, when the Dragons scored two more runs thanks to RBIs by center fielder Dylan Childers and first baseman Jesse Decker.

Thanks to good pitching by both Joe Powell and Sean Stargel, Pickens was in good enough position with the five runs the team had scored after just four innings of play. However, the team ensured themselves of a victory with two more runs in both the fifth and sixth inning. The Indians were able to score one run in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to beat Pickens on this day.

The Dragons managed ten hits in the victory, with three Dragons—Eric Justice, Dylan Childers, and Tanner Brumby—recording two hits a piece. Jesse Decker led the team with 2 RBIs in the win.

Pickens’ pitchers also played a huge role in the victory, as Joe Powell gave up just five hits with five strikeouts in three innings and Sean Stargel didn’t give up a single hit and recorded five strikeouts of his own in four innings.

Pickens faces off with the Indians in its next game on Thursday, which will be played at Murray at 5. The JV Dragons have a road game of their Tuesday afternoon as they take on Dawson at 4:30.
