The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes put it all out on the line on Monday night against Gilmer, as the girl’s defeated the Lady Cats 2-1 in the second overtime and the boy’s lost a heartbreaker to the Bobcats 6-5 in penalty kicks.
The Dragonettes fought hard throughout the eighty minutes of play, and while the day was all about the outgoing seniors, it was freshman Haley Kalson that led the team to victory. Kalson scored the tying goal with four minutes left in the second half and helped the team claim the win thanks to a goal with 1:23 left in the second overtime that was set up by teammate Kimberly Walker. Pickens won the match by the final score of 2-1, giving the four seniors on the team—Sarah Bailey, Erin Dean, Heather Fox, and Lindsey Headrick—a victory in their last home game.
Following the Dragonettes’ game was the boy’s matchup between the Dragons and the Bobcats, which was a close game throughout the eighty minutes of play. A goal by Gilmer with 2:50 left in the first half of play built a 1-0 lead for the Bobcats, a lead they maintained until Titus Henderson’s goal with 33 minutes left in the second half tied the game at 1-1.
After two overtime sessions in which neither team scored, the game went into penalty kicks with each team sending out five players to attempt to score. The Dragons put up a good effort in the high-pressure situation, but unfortunately came up a goal short, losing the match 6-5.
The Dragons and Dragonettes each have one game left on the schedule, as they take on Dawsonville on Wednesday, April 11th. The girls’ game starts at 5:00 with the boys’ game slated to follow at 7:00.
