The Pickens Dragons added two more games to the win column yesterday thanks to a sweep of the Cass Colonels, which leaves the team with an unblemished mark in summer ball and a current winning streak of twenty-four games.

Pickens had very little trouble in its double header with Cass, coasting to an 8-4 win in the first game and then clobbering the Colonels 12-2 in the second. On the mound for the Dragons in the first game of the evening was Dylan Childers, who pitched out of a tough situation in the opening inning of play and allowed just one run. The Pickens’ offense helped their pitcher out when it was their chance to hit, as the team batted around and scored five runs thanks to a double to left field by Childers, which brought in leadoff man Eric Justice, a groundout by Bryan Morris, which allowed second baseman Bryan Morris to score, a groundball that Colton Prather reached base on thanks to an error by the Colonels’ first baseman, which opened the door for Childers to come home, a double by Taylor Logan, which brought in Prather, and a ball hit by Sean Stargel that was dropped by the Cass left fielder, which let Logan stroll to home plate.

The Dragons increased the damage in the bottom of the second inning, as Eric Justice scored when courtesy runner Wyatt Ingram drew the Colonels’ catcher’s attention by attempting to steal first; although Ingram was called out on the bang-bang play at second, it can be considered a successful attempt as it helped increase the team’s lead to five runs. Despite the Colonels scoring two runs in the top of the third thanks in part to a ball that Dragons left fielder Sean Stargel unfortunately lost in the sun, Childers and the rest of the team did not lose their focus, as the score stayed at 6-3 from this point until the bottom of the fourth, when Bryan Morris scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-3 ballgame and then two batters later Taylor Logan hit a double and then subsequently scored on a single by Jerry Gordon.

The Colonels didn’t go down without a fight in the bottom of the fifth inning, cutting the Dragons’ lead to 8-4 on a play that was highlighted by a Web Gem-worthy double play turned by Luke Burch and Taylor Logan. However, Dylan Childers took care of the situation, and a harmless flyout by the final Cass hitter gave Pickens the 8-4 victory.

Powered by the impressive offensive output by the team and the quality start by Childers (allowed just four hits with four strikeouts to match), the Dragons hit the field again for the second game with Eric Justice on the mound. Justice took care of the Colonels in the top of inning number one, opening the door for the Dragons to get it going in the bottom half of the inning. The team did just that, as the Dragons stayed patient at the plate and drew three walks in what proved to be a four-run inning. Pickens continued to pick at Cass’s starting pitcher in the next two innings of play, which led to the team doubling their lead to 8-0.

Although the Colonels cut into the Dragons’ lead in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 8-2, Pickens wasn’t about to allow an incredible comeback to occur and instead added icing to the cake with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Eric Justice then struck out the side in the top of the fifth—just as he had predicted in the Dragons’ dugout—to end the game with the final score of 12-2.

The near-perfect performances of the Dragons’ hitters and the pitching duo of Childers and Justice led to the team preserving their perfect summer season, as the team has notched an incredible twenty-four wins in twenty-four games. The team will look to make it twenty-five for twenty-five on Monday, as they face off with LFO at home at 5:00 in what will be the end of the team’s summer session of baseball.
