Jasper residents will now be able to buy alcohol by the package and distilled spirits on Sundays. Yesterday, voters voted “yes” on a referendum allowing Sunday sales. According to the unofficial results 59.32 percent voted for the referendum, while 40.68 percent voted no.
In March, city council voted to put the measure on the July ballot. Mayor John Weaver said he was approached by the management of Kroger, requesting Sunday sales, explaining that the governor signed legislation last year allowing cities to decide on the matter independently.
“My position has always been,”
Weaver said in March,
“if …the people who live in the city make the determination whether they want it or not, they show up at the voting booth and decide yes or no.”
Council Member John Foust was the only member who voted against putting the referendum on the ballot.
