The Pickens Dragonettes and Dragons ended their three-game road trip on a disappointing note on Friday night against Dalton High School, as the Nettes fought hard but fell to the Lady Catamounts and the Dragons struggled against an impressive Catamounts crew. The opening game of the evening featuring the Dragonettes and the Lady Catamounts featured two squads that could never be counted out.

Pickens had trouble early on in the contest with passes due to Dalton’s propensity to press, which allowed the Lady Catamounts to start the game on a 10-5 run.

Fortunately for the Nettes, the offense finally began clicking on all cylinders, resulting in an 10-6 run to end the quarter with Dalton holding a slim 16-15 advantage.

The second quarter proved to be just as closely contested as the first, and when it was all said and done the Lady Catamounts held a 31-30 lead going into the locker room.

Determined to defeat Dalton on this night, the Dragonettes got on a hot streak at the end of the third quarter, going on a 6-0 run at the very end of the period to give the team a 45-43 lead going into the fourth.

Unfortunately for the Dragonettes, the Catamounts woke up in the fourth, exposing the Nettes’ trouble with finishing in the paint throughout the quarter.

Despite head coach Kevin Jacobs pleading for Pickens to foul quickly, the Nettes let too much time run off the clock, allowing Dalton to successfully defend their home court with a hard-fought 62-59 victory.

Kadie Mullinax had her best game of the season against Dalton, finishing the contest with a game-high twenty-two points. Mullinax also tied teammate Haley Kalson in assists with four each.

Danielle Goss and Sarah Smith also did their parts in the game, with Goss finishing with twelve points and thirteen rebounds and Smith finishing with fourteen points and fifteen rebounds.

Haley Kalson showed off her ability to pressure offenses into making bad decisions, recording six steals in the loss.

Following the girls’ game was the meeting between the Dragons and the Catamounts in a matchup that was a bit of a mismatch. A 7-0 start for the Catamounts powered the team to a 20-12 start, leaving the Dragons wondering what they needed to do to make this a game.

Pickens played hard in the second quarter, but the little mistakes that the Dragons made once they had possession of the ball were exploited by Dalton and more often than not taken advantage of. A buzzer-beater by Dalton signaled the end of the first half of play, leaving the Catamounts with a 45-24 lead.

The Dragons refused to give up in this game despite the fact that the Catamounts were able to cruise through the last two quarters on their way to a victory.

Unfortunately, the team was only able to score twenty-two second half points, leaving the team with a disheartening 71-46 loss.

Shannon Brooks led the Dragons in scoring with thirteen points in the game. Close behind was teammate Wesley Sparks, who finished the game with twelve points.

Tijah Howell led Pickens in rebounding with eight on the night.

The Dragonettes and Dragons have their first home games of the season on Saturday with games against West Forsyth. The Dragonettes will face off with the Lady Wolverines at 6:00 with the Dragons’ meeting with the Wolverines tipping off at its conclusion.
