The Pickens Dragons and Dragonettes successfully defended their home court on Tuesday night, as the Nettes defeated the Lady Indians by thirty-nine points and the Dragons outlasted the Indians in a thrilling 61-50 victory.The first game of the night featured the Dragonettes and the Lady Indians in a matchup that was very close early on, but certainly did not stay that way. Lumpkin utilized the press on defense in the first quarter of play, creating several errors by the Nettes that allowed the Lady Indians to hold a 10-7 lead after the initial quarter.

Pickens took control of the game in the second quarter, taking the lead and outscoring Lumpkin 15-4, which included a buzzer-beating three-pointer by freshman Autumn Young, to give the Nettes a comfortable 22-14 lead at the half.

The Dragonettes would hold onto this lead and never look back, outscoring the Lady Indians 48-17 in the remaining two quarters of play. When it was all said and done, the Dragonettes would win the game by the final score of 70-31.

Senior Sarah Smith had another spectacular game for the Dragonettes, leading the team in scoring with twenty-seven points and in rebounding with twelve in the game. Haley Kalson also played a pivotal role in Pickens’ victory, scoring thirteen points and recording three rebounds, three assists, and one steal in the game.

Next up was the game between the Dragons and the Indians, who came into this game with an undefeated record. The Dragons started the first quarter with some explosive plays on offense thanks to some big breaks in Lumpkin’s defense, but at the end of one Lumpkin claimed an 11-9 lead. The Dragons put together their most impressive quarter in the second, dominating the Indians in all phases of the game and eventually outscoring their opponent 20-14 to give themselves a 29-25 lead going into the locker room.

Leading but by no means in control of this game, Pickens came out of the locker room and continued to shoot lights out for all eight minutes of the third quarter. The highlight of this period and possibly the entire game came as the clock was nearing all zeroes, as Shannon Brooks obtained possession of the ball, took off towards the goal, stopped for a long-range three pointer, and drained it just before the buzzer sounded. Brooks’ fantastic shot closed a 14-8 run for Pickens, handing the home team a 43-33 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Lumpkin refused to go down without a fight in the fourth, making it a 53-50 contest with 2:45 remaining in the fourth. Fortunately for the Dragons, the team was able to maintain its lead thanks to some nicely timed scoring from Tanner Brumby, Jacob Stephens, and Clay Wigington, which helped the Dragons close out their third straight victory, this one of the 61-50 variety.

Tanner Brumby led the way for the Dragons’ offense in this victory, scoring twenty-two of the team’s sixty-one points. Brumby also had five rebounds and two assists in the game.

Clay Wigington was no stranger to the goal on this night, scoring sixteen points for the Dragons. Wigington also led Pickens in rebounds with nine and in blocks with two.

The wins for the Dragonettes and the Dragons moved both of their overall records to 3-2 , respectively. The two teams are back in action on Friday, December 6th, when they take on the White County Lady Warriors and Warriors at Pickens High School. The games are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
