Yesterday, the Dragons varsity basketball team traveled up 515 to play in the first day of the Thanksgiving tournament at Gilmer High School taking on the Rebels of Fannin County High School. The Dragons, coming off of a double overtime loss to Dawson, looked to build momentum for the rest of the season in this opening tournament game. Dragon Nation would certainly be pleased with the way their Dragons played yesterday.
The Dragons would jump out early on the Rebels forcing the Fannin head coach to call an early timeout. Fannin would make a little run by the end of the quarter, but Pickens would maintain the lead 13-9 heading to the 2nd quarter. After Shannon Brooks would have a seat on the bench due to foul trouble, Holden Roop took the opportunity to take over the rest of the quarter as he and the Dragons outscored the Rebels 12-7 leading 25-19 at the half.
Pickens defense held the Rebels to just 6 3rd quarter points as the offense would explode for 15 3rd quarter points to help stretch the lead out to 40-22 heading to the 4th quarter. The lead grew up to as much as 23 points in the 4th with the Dragons winning this one 58-35.
Pickens had three players in double digits and leading the way for the Dragons were
Holden Roop: 13 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds
Shannon Brooks: 10 points, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds
Clay Wigington: 10 points and 5 rebounds
Luke Smith: 8 points, 1 assist, and 4 rebounds
Travis Huffman: 8 points, 1 assist, and 1 rebound
