Nettes Sweep Ridgeland Will Be 3rd Seed In Region Tournament

Tonight, the Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip up to Ridgeland High School to take on the Lady Panthers. A win and a Heritage loss, meant a coin flip later in the evening determined if the Nettes were the third or fourth seed in next weeks region tournament.The first quarter started off very slow for the Nettes going down 8-0 early. Pickens outscored the Lady Panthers 10-9 the rest of the quarter, but found themselves down 17-10. The second quarter saw the Nettes wake up offensively as they outscored Ridgeland 22-12 to take a 32-29 lead into the break.

In the third, both teams took turns scoring as Pickens outscored the Lady Panthers 18-16 to hold a 50-45 lead going to the fourth and final quarter. The Nettes held off any comeback attempt, winning the quarter 17-13 to seal the win, 67-58. Pickens finishes the regular season 12-13 overall and 8-6 in region play.

Leading the way for the Nettes yesterday were:

Haley Kalson: 17 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals

Taylor Wigington: 14 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals

Autumn Young: 11 points, 1 assist, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals

Kaitlin Redman: 10 points, 1 assist, 6 rebounds, and a steal

Mackenzie Hampton: 6 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal

Makayla Payne scored 5 points, dished 2 assists, grabbed 2 rebounds and picked off a pass, and Ashley Nelson added 4 points, an assist, a rebound, and 2 steals

Pickens won the coin toss over Heritage and as a result will be the 3rd seed in next week’s region tournament. The Nettes will match up against the 6th seed Cartersville. Winner seals a state tournament birth. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 pm on February 10th at Southeast Whitfield.
