This afternoon, the Dragons varsity baseball team hosted the Ramblers of LaFayette at Dragons field in region 7AAAA action. Pickens, coming off of a big win against Heritage on Tuesday, looked to continue their winning ways against the Ramblers on a very cloudy day.Sophomore Travis Huffman got the call to start for the Dragons and looked good. Huffman, the Defensive Player of the Year for the varsity basketball team, got out of a little trouble in the top of the first to send us to the bottom of the inning. Pickens were unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the frame and we headed to the 2nd, tied at 0. In the top of the 2nd, LaFayette threatened, but the Ramblers stranded a runner at second as the Dragons came up in the bottom half.
Tyler Garner got the inning started with a lead off double, Dalton Presley reached on a fielder’s choice when the 3rd baseman for LaFayette attempted to throw Garner out at second instead of throwing to first. Garner advanced to third after tagging up on Wyatt Gooch’s flyout to center. Walker Lawrence then drew a walk and Travis Seay cleared the bases with a 3 run double to give Pickens the lead, 3-0. Zack Moore brought in Seay with an RBI single, Zack Hermann got on with a bunt single, and Cam Gregory cleared the bases with a 2 run double to make it 6-0, Gregory came around to score on Travis Huffman’s sac fly to give the Dragons a 7-0 lead going to the 3rd.
The Ramblers cut into the lead in the top of the 3rd, making it 7-1. Pickens stranded a runner at first in the bottom of the 3rd keeping it 7-1 as we went to the 4th. LaFayette threatened to cut deeper into the Dragons lead, but T. Huffman and the defense, including Lawrence throwing a runner out out the plate, were able to get out of it with two runners stranded and a 7-1 lead still intact going to the bottom of the 4th.
Moore got the half inning started with a lead off single, Hermann then reached on an error. T. Huffman drove in Moore and Garner brought in Hermann on a sac fly. Presley stepped to the plate with a 3-1 count and swung for the fence and hit the fair pole for a solo shot to stretch the lead to 11-1 in the Dragons favor. Dylan Huffman, Younger brother of Travis, came in and shut down the Ramblers to end the inning and the game as Pickens got the win, 11-1 in 4 1/2 innings. The Dragons are now 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in region play and have won three straight games.
