Dragons Pounce On Panthers 13-5 For Fifth Straight Home Win

On Friday, the Dragons varsity baseball team hosted the Panthers of Ridgeland at Dragons Field in 7-AAAA region action. After coming off of a close win against their rival Gilmer on Wednesday, Pickens looked continue their winning ways on their home field against another region foe.Sophomore Travis Huffman took the mound for the Dragons on Friday. Huffman was able to end a possible early Ridgeland threat as he struck out two in the inning, sending us to the bottom of the 1st. Huffman then got things started for Pickens as he drew a lead off walk and came in to score on Cam Gregory’s sacrifice fly. Designated hitter Tyler Garner singled and Dalton Presley doubled him in as the Dragons took a 2-0 lead to the 2nd.

The Panthers were able to cut the lead in half in the top of the 2nd and Pickens went quietly in the bottom of the inning as we’d head to the 3rd, Dragons ahead, 2-1. Ridgeland threatened to tie or take the lead in the 3rd but stranded runners at 2nd and 3rd as Huffman struck out three to keep it 2-1. Pickens added to their lead in the bottom of the 3rd as Gregory doubled, Garner drew a walk, Presley, in his 2nd plate appearance, doubled in a run as Gregory came around to score making it 3-1. Garner came home on Walker Lawrence’s sacrifice fly to stretch the Dragons lead to 4-1 going to the 4th.

The Panthers again missed another chance to score as they left a runner on 2nd and still trailed 4-1 going to the bottom of the 4th. Huffman drew a two-out walk and advanced to 3rd on Zack Hermann’s double. Gregory collected his 2nd RBI of the game as he singled in Huffman to make it 5-1 Pickens as we headed to the 5th. Ridgeland got things going in the 5th as four runs came across to score tying things up at 5 a piece. However, the Dragons took the lead back in the bottom of the 5th as Wyatt Gooch drove in courtesy runner Dylan Huffman to make it 6-5 going to the 6th.

Logan Milsaps relieved Travis Huffman in the 6th and was able to shut the Panthers down. Pickens batted around in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 7 runs, (6 earned), on 7 hits to break things open 13-5 going to the 7th. Milsaps struck out two in the 7th to close things out as the Dragons got the win, 13-5. Their 5th straight win at home. Pickens is now 8-6 overall and 4-2 ib region play.

Travis Huffman went 5 innings giving striking out 6 on 84 pitches and going 1-3 at the plate with 2 BB’s and scoring 3 runs

Dalton Presley went 3-4 with two doubles and a single and 3 RBI

Cam Gregory went 3-4 with a double and two singles with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored

Zack Hermann went 3-5 with a double and two singles with an RBI and a run scored

Dragons scored 13 runs on 15 hits

Pickens will again be at home on Tuesday as they welcome the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield to Dragons Field at 5:30. It’ll be Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Dragons Field so please be sure to wear pink to the ball field.
