This afternoon, the Dragons hosted the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield at Dragons Field in 7-AAAA action. Pickens came into the game winners of their last five at home. There was a “pink out” tonight to raise awareness for breast cancer and four survivors were honored before the game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.After the pregame festivities concluded, Tyler Garner took the ball for the Dragons to start the ball game. Garner was able to get out of early trouble and strike out two Raiders sending us to the bottom half of the frame. In the bottom of the 1st, Garner helped his own cause driving in Cam Gregory to give Pickens a 1-0 lead going to the 2nd. Garner would then strikeout three in the top of the 2nd bringing his total to 5.
The Dragons added to their lead in the bottom of the 2nd after Travis Seay drove in Walker Lawrence, Seay scored on a wild pitch, then Travis Huffman and Zack Hermann touched home on Gregory’s 2-run single giving Pickens a 5-0 lead going to the 3rd. Southeast Whitfield got two back in the top of the 3rd cutting the lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Dragons showed patience at the plate, drawing four walks. Those four walks, a hit, and an error lead to Pickens adding 5 more runs to their total giving them a 10-2 lead going to the 4th. Garner added to his strike out total in the 4th, ringing up two more Raiders to send us to the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the 4th, Garner got things started by hustling to third for a triple, Logan Milsaps, courtesy running for Garner, scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-2. Dalton Presley scored the 2nd of the two 4th inning runs for Pickens after a bases loaded walk giving the Dragons a 12-2 lead going to the 5th.
Garner got out of trouble in the top of the 5th to seal the game for Pickens 12-2. The Dragons now have won 6 straight games on their home field, are 9-6 overall, and 5-2 in 7-AAAA play.
Garner went 5 innings giving up 2 runs on three hits striking out 9 on 100 pitches and went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored
Walker Lawrence went 2-2 with 2 singles, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk
Cam Gregory went 1-2 with a single, 2 RBI, a run scored, and a walk
In total, Pickens drew 10 walks and scored 12 runs on 7 hits
The Dragons will have a quick turnaround as they’ll travel to Catoosa County tomorrow afternoon to take on a team they beat at home earlier in the season, the Heritage Generals. This game was originally scheduled for Thursday but due to incoming weather was moved to tomorrow. Pickens will then travel to LaFayette on Friday afternoon for another key region game. Both are scheduled to start at 5:30.
