Larry M. Atherton, 73 years of age, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Everett Atherton.

After returning to Pickens County in 2012 from Dawson, Georgia, Larry reunited with the Jasper United Methodist Church. During his fifty years membership with the Dawson United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities including President of the Berean Sunday School Class, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, Choir and Sunday School Teacher.

He was honored to have served his country in the Vietnam War earning the Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, RUN Campaign Medal with 1960 Device and 2 Overseas Service Bars.

Service to others always his goal, thinking a self-centered life was not worth living, he served proudly on the Terrell County Board of Commissioners for 28 years, Dawson Country Club Board for 8 years, Albany Area Primary Health Care Board for 8 years, Little League Baseball Coach for 8 years, Hunter’s Safety Course Instructor for 16 years, 4-H Advisory Board, and member of Terrell County Sertoma Club, Terrell Academy Patrons, Department of Family and Children’s Services, Terrell County Boys and Girls Club, Family Connections, Terrell County Recreation Board, Chamber of Commerce, Friends of 4-H, VFW, and American Legion.

After retiring from Dawson Manufacturing Company, he was a full-time taxidermist.

Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Duncan Atherton; two sons, Mark and David and six grandchildren.

Reverend Greg Meadows and Reverend Max Caylor will conduct the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 12th at the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Atherton Family Plot at Jasper City Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the staff of Roper Funeral Home in Jasper, GA.
