Who Is ACES?
ACES is an acronym for Appalachian Children’s Emergency Shelter. Unfortunately there is a shortage of group homes throughout Georgia. This is the very reason it is so important for ACES to survive…to give our children a safe and secure environment. Our shelter allows most of our children the opportunity to stay within their local school system and not miss out on their schoolwork.
ACES‘s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and nurturing shelter for children who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect. We help our children discover their strengths and learn to cope with the crises in their lives. We strive to recognize the value and dignity of each child we serve.
ACES received its first children in March, 2014. We are able to accommodate 8 children – 4 boys/4 girls, ages 12-18, which gives us the opportunity to try to keep siblings together. We provide both emergency and long-term placement based on the needs of each child.
ACES has a wonderful staff committed to serving our children. Aside from providing basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing we work to ensure their medical, dental, therapeutic, and social needs are met as well. We have programs designed to benefit the children such as mentors, tutors, life skills, etc. Our funding is partially provided by the state Department of Children and Family Services; we rely on the generosity and financial support of the community to meet the rest of our needs.
ACES loves our volunteers. We are always looking for people to help in any way, whether it is in one of the programs listed above or simply donating items or lending financial support. Without our volunteers we simply could not survive.
So, Who Is ACES? We are a wonderful community driven organization that strives to give our children the second chance they deserve.
