PCAP’s Margy Lohman Honored for a Career of Service

Margy Lohman, founder and former Executive Director of Prevent Child Abuse Pickens, received the
Mark Chaffin Community Award for her 25 years of dedication to preventing child abuse in Pickens
County. The award was presented on September 13 by Julia Neighbors, Director of Prevent Child Abuse
Georgia at a luncheon attended by hundreds of workers in the field of child abuse during the annual
Georgia Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect.

This award is given in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Mark Chaffin, who was a leader in
the field of child maltreatment research. This award recognizes an individual who has made
repeated, significant, and outstanding contributions and commitment to the prevention of
child abuse and neglect in Georgia. Among other criteria, the award acknowledges
consistent involvement and strong leadership in child abuse prevention; recognition by
colleagues and peers as an informed, passionate prevention leader; the ability to motivate
and bring together multiple individuals, groups, sectors in support of prevention strategies,
policies, and practices and has assisted in securing funding efforts or brought together

On presenting the award, Ms. Neighbors complimented Margy’s service, tenacity and
community leadership. Excerpts from her presentation speech include:
“Through endless hours of dedication, Margy has created a community support system that
has helped countless families address and overcome complex challenges.”

“Margy has been a role model for co-workers and families, showing them that with
persistence and hard work, anything is possible . . . “

“Through Margy’s dedication, PCA Pickens has been able to offer evidence-based child
maltreatment prevention programs to families in Pickens County such as First Steps (since
1995), Healthy Families (since 1996), and Parents as Teachers (since 2009).”
