Nettes sweep Lady Bruins, overtake 1st place in region
PHS Basketball, Team FYN Sports February 10, 2021Pickens, County Ga — After having the weekend to prepare, the Pickens Dragonettes (17-4, 9-2) welcomed the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins (9-9, 9-2) for the second of their two regular season games. On Thursday, February 4th, the Nettes went to Tunnel Hill and defeated the Lady Bruins 50-48. That was their first ever win against Northwest Whitfield in 19 games. The 20th game against these two teams was one of the most important. With the home crowd firmly behind them, the Nettes came away with a 50-30 win.
To start the first quarter, the Lady Bruins got back to back buckets to take a 4-0 lead early. Cassidy Richards, got the Nettes on the board with a pair of free throws to make it 4-2. The two teams were even the rest of the quarter as Northwest Whitfield took a 10-8 lead into the second.
Richards got the second quarter started with back to back three pointers to give Pickens a 14-10 lead. After the Lady Bruins hit a bucket, the Nettes countered with a three pointer to make it 17-12. A free throw would be the last point Northwest Whitfield would score in the first half as the Nettes went on an 8-0 run aided by Carmyn Mullins, Richards, and Amanda Nelson to close the second quarter. Going to the half, Pickens led the Lady Bruins, 25-13.
The third quarter began with Carmyn Mullins making a free throw, and Reagan Harwood hitting a three pointer to give the Nettes a 29-13 lead. After a 4-0 run by Northwest Whitfield, Pickens went on a 9-0 run getting scores from Nelson, Carmyn Mullins, Harwood, and Caroline Mullins to make it 38-17. A bucket by the Lady Bruins closed the third quarter as the Nettes led 38-19 going to the fourth.
A free throw for the Nettes kicked off the fourth quarter to make it 39-19. Northwest Whitfield, went on a 6-0 run as they cut the lead to 39-25. After Carmyn Mullins made a bucket, the Lady Bruins hit a pair of free throws. Pickens and Northwest Whitfield then traded buckets as the Nettes still led, 43-29. Nelson hit three free throws out of four attempts to make it 46-29. After a free throw from the Lady Bruins, Carmyn Mullins, Nelson, and Caroline Mullins all hit a free throw to seal the 50-30 win for the Nettes.

With the win, the Nettes take over 1st place in the region standings. With a win over the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders on Friday, Pickens will win the regular season region title, clinch the #1 seed in the upcoming region tournament, and punch their ticket to the 4A state tournament. Tip off for the game on Friday is set for 6 pm.
