PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. – On Jan. 22, a sewer spill was reported in Pickens County at the Town Creek Lift Station.
The spill was caused by a pump failure in lift station wet well due to pump getting clogged up by materials not intended to be flushed through the sewer system.
This caused the pump motor to be burned up.
2,000 gallons are estimated to have been discharged.
City crews stopped the spill and replaced the pump in the lift station.
The area has been remediated with lime, and samples are being taken upstream and downstream of the incident for 7 days.
Any questions may be directed to Kim Goldener with the City of Jasper, 706-692-9100.
Also, the city stated that corrective action had been taken by checking the collection system upstream of this station to ensure that rags, wipes, and other materials found wound up in the pump motor and around the pump housing are being cleared from the system before they have an opportunity to cause problems at the station.
