Nettes and Lady Wolverines go down to the wire

Jasper, Ga — It was Monday Night Basketball on Monday, November 24th as the second day of the PHS Thanksgiving Classic was underway. Earlier girls action saw North Cobb defeat Gilmer, 44-34. The nightcap, saw the Pickens Dragonettes, take on the Woodstock Lady Wolverines. The Nettes, would battle back from trailing by as much as 14, but would come up just a little short in a 52-49 defeat.

 

Lyla Sanderson, would get the scoring started by putting the Lady Wolverines on top, 3-0. Ellison Steinhauer, would get going by rattling off a mini 4-0 run to give the Nettes a one point lead. Emily Jacobs, Sanderson, and Mackenzie Slater, would combine to go on a 10-0 run to make it 13-4 Lady Wolverines. Freshman Darbi Stanley, would put an end to the run to make it 13-7.

A bucket by Slater, would give Woodstock a 15-7 advantage. Steinhauer, would close out the first quarter by splitting a pair of free throws. Heading to the second quarter, the Lady Wolverines led it, 15-8.

 

The second quarter began with Slater and Cameron Schlichting, combining to go on a 5-0 run to stretch the Lady Wolverines lead out to 20-8. A layup by Skyler Lathem, would end the run and make it a 10 points game. A three by Reagan Ludington, would cut the lead down to 7. A pair of free throws by Steinhauer, would trim the lead down to 20-15.

Back to back threes from Sanderson, and a three by Slater, would make it 29-15 Woodstock. After a timeout by the Nettes, Stanley, would hit her second three of the game to make it 29-18. Tania Rivera and Steinhauer, would end the first half making back to back baskets to cut the Lady Wolverines lead down to 29-22 heading into the break.

 

A three by Rivera, would open up the second half and cut the lead down to four. After a bucket by Steinhauer, Lillian Barrett, would hit a three to make it 32-27. Jacobs, would add a basket to make it a seven point game again. Back to back baskets from Steinhauer, would cut the lead to three. Slater, would then convert on an and-1 play to stretch the lead to six.

Bree Jewell and Steinhauer, would combine to go on a 5-0 run to end the third quarter to cut the Lady Wolverines lead down to 37-36 heading to the fourth.

 

A jumper by Stanley, would give the Nettes their first lead since the first quarter to open the fourth. Slater, would give the Lady Wolverines the lead right back with a bucket. After Barrett made a pair of free throws, Steinhauer, would get a layup to go to trim the lead to one. Barrett and Sanderson, would then combine to go on an 8-0 run to stretch the lead to nine.

Steinhauer and Stanley, would combine to go on an 8-0 run themselves to once again cut the lead down to one. Slater, would put an end to the run with a basket to make it a three point game. Rivera, would split a pair of free throws to make it 51-49. After Jacobs split a pair of free throws, the Nettes brought the ball down to their end of the floor and called a timeout.

Steinhauer, would get a good look at a potential game tying three, but it would rim in and out and the Lady Wolverines would hold on to pick up a 52-49 win.

Tania Rivera: 8 points

Bree Jewell: 3 points

Reagan Ludington: 3 points

Skyler Lathem: 2 points

 

A 515 rivalry will reignite for the third and final day of the PHS Thanksgiving Classic as the Nettes will take on the Gilmer Lady Cats on Tuesday, November 25th. Unless they happen to meet in the playoffs, this will be the only match up between Pickens and Gilmer as the boys teams do not play each other in the regular season. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
