Big third quarter helps Nettes sweep Chestatee

Gainesville, Ga — With impending winter weather looming, the games that were originally set for Friday, January 23rd, were bumped up a day to Thursday, January 22nd as the Pickens Dragonettes, made the trip down to Gainesville to take on the Chestatee Lady War Eagles in 6-AAA region action. A 21-5 third quarter, helped the Nettes earn a big 56-37 win over the Lady War Eagles.

 

Reagan Ludington, would start the game off with a layup, and then convert a turnover into points as the Nettes led 4-0 early. After a three by the Lady War Eagles cut the lead to one, the Nettes, would go on a 9-0 run powered by Skyler Lathem, Tania Rivera, Ludington, and Bree Jewell to take a 13-3 lead. A 5-0 run by the Lady War Eagles, would trim the lead to 13-8.

A late basket by Ellison Steinhauer, would give the Nettes a 15-8 lead over the Lady War Eagles heading into the second quarter.

 

Darbi Stanley, would hit her first three of the night to begin the second quarter to give the Nettes a 10 point lead. After a mini 4-0 run by the Lady War Eagles, Steinhauer, would get one to go to make it 20-12. Lexi Moss, would then split a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 7. Steinhauer and Ludington, would combine to go on a 4-0 run to stretch the lead out to 11.

A 5-0 run by Jamya Weaver and Moss, would cut the lead to 6. Steinhauer, would put an end to the run with a bucket to give the Nettes an 8 point advantage. A late basket from Moss, would cut the Nettes lead to 26-20 at the break.

 

The Nettes, led by Steinhauer and Lathem, would come out and start the third quarter on a 10-0 run to stretch the lead to 36-20. A three by Moss, would end that run. Rivera, Stanley, and Caleigh Hoffard, would combine to go on an 8-0 run to make it 44-23. After a basket by the Lady War Eagles, Stanley, would hit her second three of the quarter to make it 47-25 Nettes heading to the fourth.

 

The Lady War Eagles, would get things going in the fourth with a bucket to cut the lead to 20. The Nettes, would go on a 6-0 run as Rivera would connect on a jumper, Steinhauer, would split a pair of free throws, and Ruby Flatt, would hit a three to make it 53-27. Blakely Boyd and Weaver, would respond with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 21. A three by Stanley, would make it 56-32.

The Lady War Eagles, would end the game on a 5-0 run as the Nettes would come away with a 56-37 win to sweep the season series.

With the win, the Nettes are now 11-8 and 6-2 in 6-AAA play. As of now, they are scheduled to head to Lumpkin to take on the Lady Indians on Tuesday, January 27th at 6 pm. That will depend on how the weather shakes out over the weekend.

Stanley leads the way in Nettes win over Dawson

Jasper, Ga — We’re officially halfway through the 6-AAA region schedule as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the Dawson Lady Tigers on Tuesday, January 20th. The Nettes, were coming off a tough loss to region leader GAC last Friday. The Lady Tigers, were looking to rebound after a loss to White County. The Nettes, got big contributions from Freshman Darbi Stanley and Junior Tania Rivera as they were able to come away with a 57-44 victory.

 

Reagan Ludington, would get the scoring started for the Nettes in the first quarter as she would knock down a three. Ellison Steinhauer, would then go to the line and make a pair of free throws to give the Nettes a 5-0 lead. The Lady Tigers, who were without two players for this game, would turn to Lilly Abbott and she would end up carrying the load for Dawson. Abbott, would give the Lady Tigers the lead after a 9-0 run.

The Nettes, would respond with a 13-0 run led by Steinhauer, Skyler Lathem, Stanley, and Bree Jewell. A late foul, would send Andee Howell to the line where she would make both free throws to cut the Nettes lead to 18-11 heading to the second quarter.

 

Abbott, would open the second quarter with a three to cut the lead to four. A nice drive to the basket by Jewell, would lead to a layup to make it 20-14. After a layup by Abbott, Stanley, would hit a three to make it 23-16. Abbott, would get to the rim again for another basket. Steinhauer, would bring the lead back to 7 with a pair of free throws. Kadence Rhodes, would cut the lead back to 5 after she made a pair of free throws.

Abbott, would then add another three to cut the lead down to 2. After a three by Rivera, Abbott, would end the first half with another three to make it 28-26 Nettes heading into the half.

 

Rivera, would begin the second half with a three to make it 31-26. After a three by Abbott, Stanley, would knock down back to back threes to make it 37-29. A 5-0 combined run by Rhodes and Abbott, would cut the Nettes lead down to 3. A pair of free throws by Caleigh Hoffard, would stretch the lead back to 5. Ramsey Smith, would get a bucket to go to cut the lead back down to 3. Back to back threes by Stanley and Rivera to close the third quarter, would give the Nettes a 45-36 lead heading to the fourth.

 

Stanley, Rivera, Steinhauer, and Hoffard, would continue the run started by Stanley and Rivera to end the third quarter to begin the fourth quarter to make it 57-36. The Lady Tigers, would end the game on an 8-0 combined run by Baylee Green, Abbott, and Rhodes. The Nettes, withstand a game high 31 points by Abbott to pick up the win, 57-44.

Big second half leads to region win for the Nettes

Jasper, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, opened up region 6-AAA play on Friday, December 5th as they welcomed the Chestatee Lady War Eagles to the Dragons Den. It was the only girls region game on the docket for the day so a win by either team would put them in first by themselves. After a tight first half, the Nettes, outscored the Lady War Eagles 33-19 in the second half to come away with a 54-40 victory.

 

The Lady War Eagles, would get the scoring started with back to back baskets by Ali Jae Bull and Jamya Weaver to make it 4-0 early. A layup by Skyler Lathem, would cut the lead in half. A 5-0 run by Bull, would stretch the lead out to 9-2. A pair of free throws by Bree Jewell, would trim the lead to five. After a bucket by the Lady War Eagles, Tania Rivera and Ellison Steinhauer, would combine to end the quarter on a 5-0 run. Chestatee led it, 11-9.

 

Steinhauer and Darbi Stanley, would continue that run into the second quarter as the Nettes would take their first lead of the game at 13-11. A 7-0 run by the Lady War Eagles, would put them back in front at 18-13. A three by Caleigh Hofford and a basket by Steinhauer, would tie the game at 18. The Lady War Eagles, would go back in front after splitting a pair of free throws and Bull getting a layup to go to make it 21-18.

A buzzer beating three to end the first half by Steinhauer, would tie things up at 21 as they would head to the break in this tightly played contest.

 

Rivera, Reagan Ludington, and Steinhauer, would open the third quarter by combining to go on a 7-0 run to give the Nettes a 28-21 lead. After a bucket by the Lady War Eagles ended the run, Jewell, would split a pair of free throws to make it 29-23. After a timeout, a basket by Steinhauer, would make it an 8 point lead. After a pair of free throws by Bull, Steinhauer, would get a bucket to go to bring back to an 8 point lead.

Weaver, would hit a three to cut the lead down to 5. The two teams would trade baskets to end the third quarter as the Nettes would take a 42-34 lead into the fourth.

 

A 5-0 combined run by Stanley and Lathem to start the fourth quarter, would stretch the Nettes lead out to 47-34. After Weaver split a pair of free throws, Jewell, would hit a three to make it 50-35. Bull, would then make a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 13. A bucket by Stanley, would bring it back to 15. Ludington, would follow that with a basket to make it 54-37.

The Lady War Eagles, would finish the game by making three out of four free throws as the Nettes would come away with the win, 54-40.

Nettes defeat Lady Cats in Thanksgiving Classic finale

Jasper, Ga — The third and final day of the PHS Thanksgiving Classic brought us a 515 rivalry match up as the Pickens Dragonettes, faced off against the Gilmer Lady Cats on Tuesday, November 25th. Barring a match up in the playoffs, this was the only time Pickens and Gilmer will have met this season. It was a high intensity, low scoring game. In the end, the Nettes, would come out on top, 42-35.

 

The Lady Cats, would go on an early run to start the game as Bree Burnette and Jace Sanderson, combined to score the first 7 points of the night. Ellison Steinhauer, would get the Nettes going with a 5-0 run to make it 7-5. Make Taylor, Sanderson, and Chelsey Griggs, would combine to go on a 6-0 run to make it 13-5. A three by Bree Jewell, would cut the Lady Cats lead to 13-8 heading to the second quarter.

 

A bucket by Steinhauer, would cut the lead to 3 to start the second quarter. Burnette and Caleigh Hofford, would then trade three point makes as Gilmer led it, 16-13. After a basket by Tania Rivera would cut the lead to 1, Sanderson, would make back to back baskets to give the Lady Cats a 20-15 lead. After Jewell split a pair of free throws, Steinhauer, would make a pair of free throws to close out the first half as the Lady Cats led it, 20-18 at the break.

 

Griggs, would get the second half started with a bucket to make it a 4 point game. Steinhauer, would respond with a 6-0 run to give the Nettes a 24-22 lead. Paula Robertson, would tie things up with a bucket. After a basket by Steinahuer, Robertson, would hit a three to give the Lady Cats a 27-26 lead. Ally Phillips, would split a pair of free throws to make it a 2 point game. Rivera, would hit a three just before the third quarter buzzer to give the Nettes a 29-28 lead.

 

Sanderson, would split a pair of free throws to begin the fourth quarter to tie things up at 29. Hofford, would hit her second three of the game to give the Nettes a 32-29 lead. Steinhauer, would then make a pair of free throws to stretch the lead out to 5. A basket by Sanderson, would trim the lead back to 3. A lay-in by Skyler Lathem, would put the Nettes back up 5.

After a bucket by Taylor, Reagan Ludington, would split a pair of free throws to make it 37-33. A basket by Burnette, would cut the lead to 2. Ludington and Steinhauer, would close out the game with several free throws as the Nettes would come away with the win, 42-35.

Nettes bounce back with road win at Chestatee

Gainesville, Ga — The Nettes, came into their game against the Chestatee Lady War Eagles on Friday, January 17th, looking to bounce back after a tough loss on Tuesday at Dawson. A win by the Nettes, would keep them in front of White County. The Lady War Eagles, after dropping the first two in region play, had won 4 straight region games and with a win, would put themselves in the thick of the race for the 1 seed. The Nettes, had a great game both offensively and defensively as they came away with a big 56-36 victory.

The first quarter started with Ellie Hollis finding an open lane for the layup to make it 2-0 Nettes. Ellison Steinhauer, would then find an open Hollis in the corner for a three to make it 5-0. The Nettes, would add to their lead as Bella Martin would find a cutting Steinhauer for the layup to make it 7-0. The Lady War Eagles, would end the run as Addison Boyd would hit a three to make it 7-3.

Good defense for the Nettes led to a transition bucket on offense as Steinhauer would connect on a short jumper to make it 9-3. From there, the Lady War Eagles, would go on a 9-0 run to take a 12-9 lead. A basket by Steinhauer, would end the run and cut the lead down to one. Caroline Bull, would split a pair of free throws to make it 13-11 Lady War Eagles heading to the second quarter.

Reagan Ludington, would get into the score book with a three pointer to begin the second quarter to give the Nettes a 14-13 lead. Steinhauer, would add to the lead with a turnaround jumper to make it 16-13. With the outside shot not working for the Lady War Eagles, Ali jae Bull, would take it inside for a layup to cut the lead to one. Steinhauer, would respond with a nice spin move for a jumper just inside the free throw line to make it 18-15.

Great defense by Ludington, led to a turnover by the Lady War Eagles. The Nettes, would take advantage of that turnover as Steinhauer would take it all the way for the layup to make it 20-15. Caroline Bull, getting the ball after an in-bounds play, would curl around and dive in for the layup to cut the lead to three. Steinhauer, would collect her own miss, and put it back up and in to make it 22-17.

Steinhauer, would then get the steal on the defensive end, and turn that into points as she took it all the way for the lay-in to make it 24-17. After a timeout called by Pickens, Steinhauer, would again hit a short jumper to make it 26-17. The Lady War Eagles, would end the first half on a 4-0 run as Payton Cable and Ali jae Bull would make back to back baskets to cut the Nettes lead down to 26-21 at the break.

Much like she did in the second quarter, Ludington would start the third quarter with a three pointer to make it 29-21. That would kick off what would become a 7-0 run as Hollis and Steinhauer would make back to back shots to stretch the lead out to 33-21. Addison Boyd, would end the scoring drought for the Lady War Eagles as she connected on her second three of the game to make it 33-24.

Caleigh Hoffard, would answer with a three of her own to make it 36-24. Steinhauer, would then find an open Tania Rivera underneath the basket for the layup to make it 38-24. Cable, would end the 5-0 run with a jumper to make it 38-26. Rivera, would collect an offensive rebound, and find a cutting Ludington for the layup just before the buzzer to make it 40-26 Nettes heading to the fourth.

Steinhauer, would begin the fourth quarter scoring with a three to make it 43-26. Cable, would make the layup and draw the foul. She would hit the free throw to complete the and-1 and cut the lead to 43-29. Martin, would then connect on a long two pointer to make it 45-29. Following a timeout by Pickens, Martin, would find an open Brylee Deering for the layup to make it 47-29.

After a couple of offensive rebounds, Martin, would find Hollis for the lay-in to extend the lead to 49-29. Boyd, would then connect on her third three of the game to cut the lead to 49-32. After Steinhauer split a pair of free throws, Martin, would hit a three to make it 53-32. Cable, would answer with her own three to make it 53-35. Steinhauer, would then hit her second three of the game to make it 56-35.

Blakely Boyd, would split a pair of free throws to end the fourth quarter scoring as the Nettes would pick up a 56-36 win.

Tough second half leads to Nettes first region loss

Dawsonville, Ga — After canceling their scheduled game with Walton over the weekend, the Pickens Dragonettes were finally back on the court on Tuesday, January 14th as they traveled up to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers. Coming into the game, the Nettes, were 15-1 overall and 6-0 in 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers, were 10-7 overall and 3-3 in 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers, would use a 35-19 second half to comeback from as many as 12 to pick up the 53-46 win.

In the first quarter, Reagan Ludington got the scoring started with a three. The Lady Tigers, would respond with a 5-0 run as Maddie Siuta would hit a three to tie it, and Eva Bishop would make a layup to give the Lady Tigers a 5-3 lead. The Nettes, would go on their own 5-0 run as Citadel XC/Track commit Brylee Deering, would hit a three and Bella Martin would make a pair free throws to give the Nettes an 8-5 lead.

A bucket by Ramsey Smith, would cut the lead down to 8-7. Ellison Steinhauer, would get in on the action towards the end of the quarter as she would make a layup to give the Nettes a 10-7 lead. After a basket by the Lady Tigers cut the lead back down to 1, Martin would make a late bucket to give the Nettes a 12-9 lead heading to the second quarter.

The second quarter began with the Nettes going on a 9-0 run to stretch the lead out to 21-9. A three by Siuta, would end the run and cut the lead down to 9. After a bucket by Steinhauer, Baylee Green and Ava Roberson, would combine for a mini 4-0 run to make it 23-16. A three by Steinhauer, would push the lead back to 10. After a layup by Bishop, Martin, would split a pair of free throws to close the first half with the Nettes ahead, 27-18.

The second half started with Roberson making a layup to cut the lead to 7. The Nettes, would push the lead to 11 after Steinhauer split a pair of free throws, and Ellie Hollis would nail a three to make it 31-20. After Bishop split a pair of free throws, Martin, would make a three to give the Nettes a 34-21 lead. Bishop, would then go on a 4-0 run to cut the lead back down to 9.

Tania Rivera, would end the run with a bucket to make it 36-25. After Bishop again split a pair of free throws, Rivera would get another shot to drop to make it 38-26. The Lady Tigers, would close out the third quarter on a 7-0 run as they cut the lead down to 38-33 heading to the fourth.

Steinhauer, began the fourth quarter with a basket to make it 40-33. The Lady Tigers, would then go on a 10-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter at 43-40. A three by Steinhauer, would tie it up at 43. After a bucket by Bishop, Martin would hit a three to give the Nettes a 46-45 lead. The Lady Tigers, would close out the game on an 8-0 run as they outscored the Nettes, 20-8 in the fourth to pick up a 53-46 win.

Nettes open region play with win over Lady War Eagles

Jasper, Ga — It was time to start the second season as some might call it on Friday, December 6th as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the Lady War Eagles of Chestatee in the region 6-AAA opener. The Nettes, came into the game with a 4-0 record and ranked #4 in 3A by Kyle Sandy. The Lady War Eagles, who is a team that have had a lot of recent success, came into the game with a 3-2 record. This one, was really back and forth throughout. A big second quarter was the difference as the Nettes came away with a 58-47 win.

The Lady War Eagles, got the scoring started with a three Payton Cable. Back to back baskets by Ellison Steinhauer and Bella Martin, gave the Nettes a 4-3 lead. Blakely Boyd and Caroline Bull would hit back to back threes to give Chestatee a 9-4 advantage. After a bucket by Steinhauer cut the lead to 3, Ali jae Bull would make a pair of free throws to give the Lady War Eagles an 11-6 lead.

A 5-0 run by Steinhauer, would tie the game up at 11. A late basket by Cable, would give the Lady War Eagles a 13-11 lead heading to the second quarter.

The Nettes, would begin the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. A basket by Caroline Bull would put an end to the run and make it 19-15. Jamya Weaver, would then make a pair of free throws to make a 19-17 game. Back to back threes by Martin and Reagan Ludington, would stretch the lead out to 25-17. A bucket by Ali jae Bull, would make it 25-19.

The Nettes, would end the first half by going on a 7-0 run as Martin would hit her second three of the quarter and Steinhauer would make back to back baskets to give the Nettes a 32-19 lead at the break.

Much like she did to end the first half, Steinhauer would begin the second half scoring with a bucket to stretch the lead out to 34-19. A basket by Caroline Bull would make it 34-21. Steinhauer, would then go on her second 5-0 run of the game to make it 39-21. Cable, would make back to back buckets to cut the lead to 14. Both teams would then trade baskets to end the third as the Nettes, would take a 45-30 lead into the fourth.

A three by Caroline Bull, would get the scoring started in the fourth as the lead was cut to 12. A bucket by Tania Rivera, would make it 47-33. After a basket from Boyd, the Nettes would go on a 5-0 run to make it 52-35. A bucket from Caroline Bull and a pair of free throws from Boyd, would make it 52-39. Bree Jewell, would then hit back to back threes to stretch the lead out to 58-39.

The Lady War Eagles, would close the game out on an 8-0 run. The Nettes, would come away with this one, 58-47 to move to 5-0 on the season.

Nettes win Pickens Thanksgiving Classic

Jasper, Ga — It was the final day of the Pickens Thanksgiving Classic on Monday, November 26th as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the West Forsyth Lady Wolverines. Earlier games saw Sprayberry defeat Gilmer, and Mt. Bethel defeat Alpharetta. The Nettes, would get a big game from Senior Bella Martin, and continue their stellar defensive play to begin the season as they would defeat the Lady Wolverines, 66-42.

The first quarter began with Olivia Ham getting into the lane for a tough bucket to make it 2-0 Lady Wolverines. From then on it was all Nettes the rest of the quarter as a basket by Martin would start a 19-0 quarter run. Martin, Reagan Ludington, and Ellison Steinhauer would all contribute points to the run. Heading to the second quarter, Pickens led West Forsyth, 19-2.

The Lady Wolverines, would start the second quarter off on a 4-0 run as Ham and Maren Moskau would make back to back layups to cut the lead to 19-6. After a pair of free throws from Steinhauer, Averey Glaze would split a pair from the line. Glaze, would then connect on a make after a timeout, to cut the lead to 21-9. Ellie Hollis, would get a layup to go through contact to head to the line. Hollis, would complete the 3-point play to make it 24-9. That and-1 play would start a 9-0 run for the Nettes to close out the first half as Pickens would take a 30-9 lead into the break.

The third quarter, was jam packed with offense from both teams as Martin would get it started with a three to make it 33-9. After a bit of a back and forth between both squads, the Nettes would go on a 7-0 run as Skyler Lathem would dart through the lane for a layup, Martin would make a pair of free throws, and Bree Jewel would make a three to extend the Nettes lead to 47-17.

The Lady Wolverines, would respond with a 5-0 run as Ham would connect on a three, and Yasmeen Gaiter would make a bucket to cut it to 47-22. Martin, would then head to the line after sinking a tough layup. She would complete the and-1 to make it 50-22. The Lady Wolverines, would end the third quarter on a 6-0 run as they would make four straight free throws and a layup to close out the frame. Heading to the fourth, Pickens led it, 50-28.

Martin, would again begin the quarter scoring with a three to make it 53-28. The Lady Wolverines, would then go on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 53-36. Tania Rivera, would put an end to the run with a nice layup to make it 55-36. Later on in the quarter, the Nettes would go on a 5-0 run as Kylee Bozeman would hit a three and Ludington would make a basket to stretch the lead to 66-40. A bucket by Ella Cowan would give us a final score of 66-42.
