The individual arrested during the case was Eric Wade Potts, a 37-year-old male from Jasper Georgia.
Mr. Potts has been charged with:
• Aggravated Assault against a Peace Officer
• Possession of Methamphetamine
• Possession of Marijuana (less than an ounce)
It has been determined that the secure lock box located under the rear passenger seat of the patrol unit was found to be unlocked. The box is designed to be secured storage for supplies needed during patrol time. It is not the policy of the Pickens Sheriff’s Office to allow storage of weapons in the prisoner transport compartment of the patrol car. There were no live rounds of ammunition located in the container, but the deputy had stored his less lethal weapon in this compartment.
The storage of the weapon and the lack of locking the container are both under review by Internal Investigations.
During the struggle to regain the Less Lethal Shotgun, Mr. Potts fired one round of less lethal (bean bag round). Once the deputy regained control of the weapon, he fired additional bean bag rounds at the suspect. The suspect was struck once. Following the incident, EMS responded and evaluated Mr. Potts and he was cleared to be released to
In addition to Mr. Potts, Keri Lee Lawrence, Age 42 from Canton Georgia, was also arrested during the investigation. She has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine.
We are very grateful that this incident did not escalate to a potential deadly force encounter.
The case is still active at this time, and additional details are not currently available.

According to authorities earlier this morning, July 18th, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person at a business in Tate Georgia. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a male in the parking lot of the business. As they approached him, he immediately attempted to walk away. During a pat down, deputies discovered a quantity of suspected methamphetamine and needles.
After the suspect was placed in the patrol vehicle, deputies went back to gathering information related to the initial call. Deputies went back to the vehicle to check on the individual and he had maneuvered his handcuffs from behind his back to his front and had been able to get into a secure box and retrieve a less-lethal shotgun loaded with bean bag rounds. The suspect aimed the weapon at the deputy and started to confront him. The deputy was able to wrestle the weapon away and the suspect began to run again. During the attempt to detain the individual, multiple bean bag rounds were fired by both the suspect and the deputy.
Following a brief foot pursuit, deputies were able to take him back into custody. A second individual that was with the suspect has also been detained to determine her involvement into the issue. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit has also responded to gather evidence and process the seen.
Additional details are not available at this time due to the active nature of the crime scene but will be released once they are available.

MARBLE HILL, Ga. – According to Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Captain Kris Stancil, a recent accident led to a drawn-out search and capture of one Richard Eric Duckett, 25.
The Pickens Sheriff involved support from four other agencies including GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation), Georgia State Patrol, the Gilmer Sheriff’s Office, and the Cherokee-Pickens multi-agency SWAT team.
Though they did eventually capture Duckett, what follows is the Pickens Sheriff’s Public Release about the events leading up to his capture.
During a bizarre twist of events, an accident that deputies responded to on Highway 53 East in Marble Hill Georgia on March 7th at approximately 10:30 pm, turned out to be an Aggravated Assault case. Upon arrival at an accident, deputies found the driver of one vehicle to be suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Another vehicle, a motorcycle, was also found wrecked with no driver in site.
Recognizing that this was more than an accident, deputies requested the assistance of detectives, the Georgia State Patrol and later the GBI Crime Scene Unit to respond as well.
What we have learned about this active case is that a domestic dispute erupted at a residence on Andiron Way in Marble Hill Georgia. During the dispute, Richard Eric Duckett (age 25) shot Roy Joseph Holloway in the right leg. After shooting Holloway, Duckett then fled the residence on a Yamaha Motorcycle. Holloway then got into a Lexus passenger car and began to chase after him.
As they traveled East on Hwy 53 East, Duckett lost control of the motorcycle and wrecked in the 10000 block of Hwy 53 East, near the J.M. Huber Corporation. Holloway then continued to travel East for approximately ½ mile before he wrecked the car near Pea Ridge Road.
Holloway was transported by ambulance and was treated for his injuries and released.
A search for Duckett began using the assistance of a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office canine unit. Following a track and additional witness information, it was determined that Duckett had received a ride back to the residence at 18 Andiron Way. Once this information was obtained, detectives obtained a Search Warrant and Arrest Warrant for Mr. Duckett. Due to no one answering the multiple attempts to come to the door, the Cherokee-Pickens multi-agency SWAT team was requested to execute entry and conduct a search warrant.
During the execution of the search warrant, Mr. Duckett was not found in the residence but Patrick Scheibel (age 20) was arrested for Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.
Deputies continued to search for Duckett in the immediate area throughout the night.
On Friday, March 8th, deputies were called to a residence in the area of Duckett Lane for an individual requesting an ambulance due to a motorcycle accident. Upon arrival, they learned that the individual was Mr. Duckett. He had what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. Detective accompanied him on the transport.
This case is still being actively investigated to determine the events that led up to the shooting and to process the evidence obtained at the residence and in the vehicles.
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s office there has been another attempted break in at a Pickens County Convenience Store.
On March 1, 2017 at approximately 3:00 am, a witness around Faz Corner convenience store in Marble Hill Georgia called 911 to report very suspicious noises coming from the area of the store. The caller stated that they could here loud construction like noises coming from the rear of the store. The caller also stated that a dark passenger car had stopped multiple times near the store and then pulled away.
Deputies then responded and found that the rear of the building had been cut open with some form of saw and the power had been turned off. While back up deputies were responding, a vehicle matching the description given was spotted traveling West on Hwy 53. The deputy performed an investigative traffic stop along with back up. After an initial investigation, Tecorey Johnson (27 year old, black male from Columbus Georgia) was placed under arrest for Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Trespass, and Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary.
Deputies on the scene also found foot tracks that led into the woods and a K9 track was conducted. During the track, deputies and detectives located clothes that appeared to have been removed while fleeing, but the second offender was not located.
Mr. Johnson was then transported to the Pickens County Adult Detention Center, where he remains.
Detectives are continuing to work hard to complete their investigation now and due to the active nature of the investigation, no additional details can be released at this time.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s office wishes to thank the caller for notifying them when things were out of the normal. Because of this concerned citizen, another crime was prevented.
Police are currently investigating and gathering information after gunfire exchanged tonight. Two Pickens Sheriff Deputies were hit with non-life threatening gun shot wounds. The deputies returned fire along with the Georgia State Patrol and the suspect was killed.
The altercation occurred at approximately 9 pm Saturday night, October 24th on Carver Mill Road in Talking Rock, GA after deputies responded to a domestic dispute. According to authorities two people had gotten into an argument. Although details are not available, the two people in the disagreement were not husband and wife.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate which is standard procedure for shootings involving police officers. Lt. Kris Stancil with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office told us no other information available at this time. FYN will update as more information becomes available.
